The Tyler City Council voted on April 10 to approve a $362,975.35 contract with Innovative Roadway Solutions, LLC, to execute the 2024 ONYX Seal Project.

The project involves ONYX seal treatment for 17 lane miles of city streets. It is expected to start in June 2024 and be completed by the end of August 2024.

The sealing is specifically for streets that have lost their surface asphalt content due to weathering and use. This decision was based on thorough pavement ratings, ensuring that only streets in need of sealing were identified. The selected roads are in relatively good condition but are losing their asphalt content on the surface and starting to show cracks, making them the prime candidates for the ONYX seal treatment.

ONYX is a surface treatment that prolongs the life of the street and gives drivers a safer surface on which to travel. TxDOT has approved the ONYX sealing method for road shoulders for many years and uses it in many cities to seal residential streets. This method seals the road without using a coarse aggregate like a seal coat or overlay.
