Baseball Notebook: Big Sandy’s Tyson Tapley, Hawkins’ Jacob Jones take weekly honors

Big Sandy’s Tyson Tapley and Hawkins’ Jacob Jones have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played Feb. 26-March 2.

Tapley was selected as the Hitter of the Week, while Jones was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week.

Tapley went 5-for-6 (.833) with four doubles, six RBIs, two runs and a walk. On the mound, he pitched five innings and had a 2.80 ERA.

Jones struck out 18 batters in 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and two hits with two walks.

PITCHING

Carlisle freshman Brandon Garza allowed one run on six hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in 6.2 innings.

Cayuga sophomore Gus Wilfong went 2-0, allowing two earned runs on five hits with 17 strikeouts and four walks in 12 innings, and he picked off three baserunners.

Van junior Caeden Alendaer picked up a win and allowed no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts in four innings.

Rains freshman Samuel Haney pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts and a walk in five innings against Wolfe City.

Jacksonville senior Coen Devillier allowed one run with 11 strikeouts and three walks in six innings in a 2-1 win over White Oak.

Arp junior Abraxton Martin allowed one earned run on one hit with seven strikeouts in seven innings in a 14-3 win over Tyler High.

Canton’s Nathan Parker allowed no runs on three hits with 14 strikeouts and a walk in seven innings in a win over Pine Tree.

Harmony’s Riley Patterson allowed no earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings against Class 3A No. 6 Central Heights.

Grand Saline junior Landon Mayne allowed no runs on two hits with 15 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of a 1-0 win over Mabank.

Bullard’s Kage Koronek threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts against state-ranked Spring Hill.

HITTING

Tyler Legacy’s Jared Martinez went 5-for-9 (.556) with three runs and four walks.

Carlisle freshman Antonio Ibarra went 5-for-8 (.625) with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs.

Van junior Landon Smith went 8-for-15 (.533) with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs, eight runs, three walks, three hit by pitches and five stolen bases.

Rains senior Shawn Robertson went 5-for-7 (.714) with a double, a triple, and RBI and three runs.

Arp sophomore Will Sanford went 6-for-14 (.429) with a double, a triple, two RBIs and four runs.

Harmony’s Jake Rider went 3-for-5 (.600) with a double, triple, four RBIs and a walk.

Big Sandy’s Logan Ollive went 5-for-6 (.833) with five RBIs, seven runs and four stolen bases.

Brook Hill’s Ben Braatz went 2-for-3 (.667) with a double.

Also receiving votes were Hallsville in 5A; Canton, Lindale, Spring Hill, Texarkana Pleasant Grove and Van in 4A; Diboll and Rains in 3A; and Douglass, Grapeland, Groveton, Joaquin, Kerens, Lovelady and Timpson in 2A.
