Total turnout of early voting during the March joint primary elections is trailing behind numbers reported during the 2020 and 2022 primary elections, Smith County Elections Administrator Michelle Allcon said.

“(Thursday) has been heavier than the rest of this week. That’s in line with how early voting usually is,” Allcon said. “If we keep the same type of turnout that we’ve had (Thursday on Friday), we’ll probably get close to the numbers for 2020 and 2022.”

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, more than 2,000 ballots were cast in person — an upswing for turnout thus far, Allcon said. A total of 14,646 in-person and 863 mail-in ballots have been cast, just 9% of the county’s 156,801 registered voters.

Residents can vote in Republican or Democrat Primary for county and statewide races for the Legislature and courts.

Early voting in the March 5 primaries ends Friday. Voters can cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 1 at six locations or on Election Day, Tuesday, March 5, at 38 polling places in the county.
