Foster: MAGA loyalists won’t take off their Trump blinders

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Someone recently accused me of having an ”obsessive compulsive disorder” for my unrelenting commentaries that explain that Donald Trump is more than a bad candidate. He’s really a miserable human being.

The case against Trump is readily evident to the American public. He lies, brags, defames, cheats, commits adultery and tax fraud, then lies even more. So that raises the question — why do millions of seemingly intelligent Americans continue to support such an egotistical narcissist?

I’ll also ask: Just what has Trump done to deserve such fealty? He’s now rated as one of the five worst presidents in U.S. history. He flubbed the response to the coronavirus pandemic that killed more than 104 million Americans. In turn, that led to economic woes with unemployment topping 10 percent during his term in office.

On the international scene, Trump killed the Paris Climate Accord, cozied up to dictators such as Putin and Kim Jong Un, and created tensions with China by imposing tariffs that ended up costing American consumers higher prices.

Trump gleefully insulted our NATO allies. Perhaps his worst moment came at a photo op in Europe when he shoved aside several other international leaders to get to the front of the group. And that was recorded on video.

I’ll also pose this query: Does the MAGA crowd wear blinders so that they can overlook his criminal and insulting personal acts? To me, that’s a better definition of compulsive disorder.

But karma is rapidly befalling Trump even as he tries to lock up the Republican nomination. Between his campaign events, Trump blustered after any number of court appearances to defend himself from a raft of civil suits.

A federal jury in New York ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million for defaming magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll. Just last year, another civil jury ordered Trump to pay $5 million to Carroll for “sexually abusing” her. But Trump couldn’t keep his mouth shut and continued to defame her.

Carroll testified that she has received numerous death threats, and Trump’s comments have “ruined” her life. Her lawyer asked for enough punitive damages, $24 million, to keep Trump from further attacks, but the jury’s award far exceeded that request.

Trump appealed the first jury award and promised to appeal the latest case as well. Courts may reduce the award, but he’s surely going to pay a substantial amount.

If Trump’s lawyers can’t get him to heed their advise to keep his mouth shut, perhaps he’ll listen to his accountants. According to Salon, an internet website, Trump has spent $57 million of other people’s money to pay his legal bills through 2023. This amount doesn’t include the court fines and penalties assessed against him, such as the Carroll judgments.

But those amounts pale against the pending judgment in another New York civil court. A judge already found Trump’s company guilty of tax fraud, and the state is asking for a $370 million penalty. Trump is a wealthy man, but an award of that size would force him to sell off a big chunk of his real estate holdings.

So where does Trump turn to finance his criminal activities? His adoring minions, of course. After every court appearance, Trump’s campaign goes on social media to beg for support, portraying him as a victim of persecution. If you can’t send him money, at least buy some of his $99 non-fungible tokens or a set of cards showing him hilariously muscled up like superheroes.

One last question — have you sent any money or bought anything to help Trump pay his legal bills?
