District Champions: Tyler Lady Lions clinch District 15-5A basketball title

Tyler’s A’Niya Hartsfield (1) fist bumps officials after being introduced prior to Tuesday’s game with the Marshall Lady Mavericks at the Lions Den.

With two games still remaining on the league schedule, the Tyler Lady Lions are district champions.

The Lady Lions continue their run through District 15-5A girls basketball with an 85-50 victory over the Marshall Lady Mavericks on Tuesday inside the Lions Den.



The win, coupled with Whitehouse’s 49-40 triumph over Longview, clinched the district championship for Tyler, which is 26-9 overall and 12-0 in league play. The Lady Lions also extended their winning streak to 18. Whitehouse and Longview are now tied for second with 9-3 district marks.

“That is bad news for Longview, but that is awesome news for these Lady Lions,” said first-year Tyler Coach Bobby Reynolds after hearing the result of the Whitehouse-Longview game. “We are so blessed to be district champs. Our girls have worked extremely hard all year long. We know we still have two more games to go … we would like to be undefeated champs.”

Tyler came out hot, scoring the first 11 points of the game and never trailed. The Lady Lions led 23-11 after the first quarter and 51-21 at halftime.

Kalyse Buffin led the way with 30 points. The junior star added seven rebounds and five steals. She was also 5 of 6 from the free throw line and hit three 3-pointers.

Sophomore standout Bralyah Miller added 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals. She added a 3-pointer.

Others scoring for Tyler were LaTajia Hambrick (12), Bra’Shia Miller (10), Jer’Miya Rice (5), Ma’Kayla Taylor (4) and Mairany Olivarez (2).

Taylor led the Lady Lions in rebounding with nine. Also, A’Niya Hartsfield had six boards and Bra’Shia Miller had five rebounds.

Hartsfield had seven steals and a block. Rice and Hambrick had two steals each.

Jakairi Blackwell led Marshall with 12 points, followed by Alyssa Helton (11), Calleigh Johnson (9), Hannah Carlile (6), Ta’tteara Culberson (7), Avah Flanagan (3) and Haleigh Black (2).

Helton had six rebounds with four each from Williams and Johnson.

The Lady Lions were 7 of 10 from the free throw line and 6 of 18 from 3-point (Buffin, 3; Hambrick, 1; B. Miller, 1; Rice, 1).

The Lady Mavericks were 2 of 7 from the free throw line and 10 of 21 from 3-point (Blackwell, 3; Carlile, 2; Johnson, 2; Flanagan, 1; Culberson, 1; Helton, 1).

Marshall (6-21, 2-10) is scheduled to host Hallsville at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Lions travel to Whitehouse on Friday to face the Ladycats in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at C.L. Nix Wildcat Arena. Tyler will then close out the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 6 against Texas High.
