Kilgore College East Texas Oil Museum to host history summit

KILGORE — The Kilgore College East Texas Oil Museum has scheduled The East Texas History Summit on Jan. 20.

Registration is underway at easttexasoilmuseum.kilgore.edu/events/. Tickets are free, but registration is required.
The event, made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, will include breakout sessions:
Legacy of Learning: East Texas Rural Schoolhouses: Cynthia Matlock shares insights on East Texas Rural Schools in Cherokee County;
Drilling Deeper: The East Texas Oil Boom’s Wide-Ranging Impact: Jeff Spencer from the Petroleum History Institute will speak about the legacy of Jack Nolan; and Micheal Jimerson will explore law and order during the 1930s;
Coming to Texas as Enslaved People: One Family’s Journey: Speaker is historian Greg Muckelroy; and
East Texas’ Cattle Past: Perky Beisel of Stephen F. Austin State University will talk about the cattle dipping vats of East Texas.

Registration and seating are set for 8 a.m. with the summit beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Van Cliburn Auditorium on the Kilgore campus.
The summit will conclude with a final Q&A session with presenters and closing remarks, followed at 12:30 p.m. with a light lunch at the oil museum.
The museum’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
