Woman, boy killed in Panola County fire

PANOLA COUNTY — A fire early Tuesday at a home in the Holland Quarters community of Panola County killed a woman and a boy, officials reported.

Panola County dispatch received the 911 call at 1:26 a.m. Tuesday from a neighbor reporting a residential fire on PR 623 in Holland Quarters, according to Panola County Sheriff Cutter Clinton.

“The callers told dispatchers that an adult male resident was able to escape the fire but an adult female and juvenile male were still trapped inside,” he said.

Notified of the fire were Beckville, Clayton and Carthage volunteer fire departments along with patrol deputies and Allegiance EMS, Clinton said.

“When units arrived on scene the trailer house was fully engulfed in flames,” Clinton said. The bodies of the woman and the juvenile boy were found after the fire was under control, he added.

The man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Panola County Justice of the Peace for Pcts. 1 and 4, Denise Gray performed an inquest at the scene, Clinton said. She ordered autopsies on both victims, and the bodies were sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Panola County Fire Marshal Bryan Murff is investigating the cause of the fire with assistance from the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Panola County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

Clinton said the American Red Cross was contacted and is providing aid to the family.

“This is an active investigation and no names will be released,” Clinton said. “We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims.”

No injuries reported after train derailment

MARSHALL — No was injured and no environmental issues were reported when eight freight cars of a train derailed Wednesday morning, the City of Marshall said.

Evans Street near the Marshall Depot was closed Wednesday, the city said, because of the train derailment.

Officials at the station said the derailment occurred about 7 a.m. Marshall Fire Chief Reggie Cooper, who responded to evaluate the scene, said they don’t know how the derailment occurred, but no injuries were reported.

“Everybody’s good,” he said when asked the status of the conductor, and any other train officials onboard.

Only eight freight cars were impacted.

“These are car hauls so we don’t have any hazardous materials issues to worry about,” Chief Cooper reported. “Eight cars were affected. They were carrying 12 vehicles, per car.”

“There are eight train cars rolled over. So, at this time, the city of Marshall’s only issue is the fact that Evans Street is blocked; however, train officials said within 30 minutes to an hour they would have that unblocked. So, they’re on top of it,” Cooper said about 11 a.m. Wednesday. “This is a Union Pacific investigation. They’re in control of it. We, as a city, really have no part to play in it.”
