Boys Basketball: Lions take district opener against Hallsville

HALLSVILLE — Tyler High got 17 points from Montrell Wade and 14 from Ashad Walker while using a big first quarter to take control before holding on for a 50-42 win over the Hallsville Bobcats on Tuesday in the District 15-5A basketball opener.
The Lions, using seven points from Walker and six from Wade in the opening period, took an 18-4 first quarter advantage.

Also scoring for the Lions were Tank Brooks (9), Jaishua Brown (9) and Jace Sanford (1).
Luke Cheatham had 13 points, three rebounds and three assists in the loss for Hallsville, which trailed 31-17 at halftime. Anthon McDermott had 10 points and five rebounds, and Barnabas Baliraine added eight points and 12 rebounds.
The Lions improve to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Bobcats fall to 12-3 and 0-1.
Tyler will break for Christmas and then play in the 68th Annual Floyd Wagstaff Holiday Classic at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. The Lions will play Jacksonville (8 p.m., Dec. 27), vs. Lindale (8 p.m., Dec. 28) and vs. Brownsboro (6:45 p.m., Dec. 29).
Pine Tree 44, Longview 42
LONGVIEW — At Pine Tree’s Pirate Center, the Pine Tree Pirates opened District 15-5A play with a 44-42 win over crosstown rival Longview.

Dealyn Evans paced the Pirates with 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. Cam Spencer added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Devin Washington had five points, six rebounds and four steals.
The Pine Tree JV earned a 48-47 win, and the freshman team notched a 49-35 victory.
Center 44, Chapel Hill 36
CENTER — The Chapel Hill Bulldogs dropped a 44-36 District 17-4A basketball opener to Center on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs go to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in district.
Dee Brisbon led Chapel Hill with 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Other Bulldogs scoring were Jayvin Mayfield (8 points, 1 3-pointer), Trevor Brooks (6 points, 1 3-pointer), Adrian Mumphrey (4), Cameron Kelley (2) and Keviyan Huddleston (2)
Chapel Hill will now participate in the 65th Annual Whataburger Classic on Dec. 27-29.
Mabank 59, Cumberland 33
MABANK — The Cumberland Academy Knights dropped a 59-33 District 16-4A basketball game on Tuesday.
Leading the Knights were Jeremiah Whitmore (8 points), Josiah Jordan (8) and Owen Shockey (6).
Cumberland will break for Christmas and then play in the 68th Annual Floyd Wagstaff Holiday Classic at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. The Knights will play Grace Community (12:15 p.m., Dec. 27), vs. All Saints (11 a.m., Dec. 28) and vs. King’s Academy (11 a.m., Dec. 29).
Athens 50, Canton 43
ATHENS — Athens scored a 50-43 win over Canton on Tuesday in a District 16-4A basketball game.
Chantson Prox led the Eagles with 18 points. Also scoring for Canton were Garrett Walker (12), Jaden Pickerill (8) and Layne Etheridge (5).
Eli Perkins led the Hornets with 16 points, followed by Jorien Ray with 14 points. Others scoring for Athen were Jermarius Moore (7), Jaden Crane (6), Jamarion Williams (5) and Jaxson Stiles (2).
The Eagles go to 17-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Hornets improve to 11-5 and 1-0.
Tyler HEAT 56, All Saints 38
Jackson Tomlin, Cale Starr and Cade Morgan combined for 32 points to help power the Tyler HEAT to a 56-38 win over All Saints on Tuesday in a basketball game at Brookshire Gym on the All Saints Episcopal School campus.
Tomlin led with 12 points while Star and Morgan each hit for 10 points.
Others scoring for HEAT were Waker Hartman (9), Jett Bell (7), Eli Anderson (3), Joseph Perry (3) and Kedren Penney (2).
Cullen Walker led the Trojans with 12 points, followed by Drew Jackson (11). Also scoring for All Saints were Trae Newsome (6), Paul Ceccoli (4), Jackson Hill (4) and Sam Jordan (2).
Both teams are scheduled to take part in the 58th Annual Floyd Wagstaff Holiday Classic on Dec. 27-29 at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.
Tyler HEAT will play Van (2:45 p.m., Dec. 27), vs. Brook Hill (2:45 p.m., Dec. 28) and vs. Whitehouse (5:30 p.m., Dec. 29).
All Saints will play King’s Academy (11 a.m., Dec. 27), vs. Cumberland (11 a.m., Dec. 28) and vs. Bishop Gorman (1:30 p.m., Dec. 29).
Quitman 60, Sabine 53
QUITMAN — The Quitman Bulldogs overcame a 30-26 halftime deficit to earn a 60-53 win over the Sabine Cardinals on Tuesday.
Jaydan McPherson had 17 points, Colt Sparks 12 and Clayne Simmons and Hudson McNatt eight apiece in the loss for Sabine.
Winnsboro 72, Gladewater 57
GLADEWATER — Kyler Finney scored 17 points, Will Wilcox added 15 and Winnsboro earned a 72-57 win over the Gladewater Bears on Tuesday.
DaVaunte Powers scored 22, Kollin Lewis 20 and Tristen Linwood 10 in the loss for Gladewater.
Tatum 49, Troup 42
TATUM — Jordan Chambers scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter as Tatum built a commanding 21-2 lead before holding on to earn a 49-42 win over Troup in District 16-3A action.
JaCorie Bradley added 13 for the Eagles. Cooper Whiteus finished with five, Luke Sigler three and Cayden Tatum, E.J. Lloyd and Ashby Anthony two each.
Trae Davis led the Tigers with 11 points, followed by Jarett Castillo (9), Colby Turner (9), Ty Lovelady (6), Carson Davenport (5) and Cason Mills (2).
Troup is 8-8 overall and 0-1 in district, while Tatum is 7-9 and 1-0.
Troup won the JV match (50-24) while Tatum claimed the freshmen game (55-41).
The Tigers will now host the Glen Evans Classic on Dec. 27-28 in Troup.

White Oak Alumni Game
WHITE OAK — Terrall Beall scored 22 points and collected five rebounds, and the current White Oak Roughnecks rallied for a 73-43 win over the White Oak Alumni on Tuesday.
Zac Jacyno had 18 points and five rebounds for the current team, which trailed 22-15 after one quarter but led 36-30 at halftime before going on a 28-6 run in the third quarter. Colton Millwood had 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, Kaleb Sorgee 10 points, Jaydon Medlin four points and five assists and Caden Tyner four points.
Gunner Solis scored 12 points to pace the Alumni team. Matt Bort added 10, Landon Anderson nine, Ben Jacyno six and Carson Roling, Collin Bower and Brian Williams two each.
The White Oak JV earned a 33-6 win over the Christian Heritage Classical School JV on Tuesday.
White Oak will next participate in the Tenaha Tournament on Dec. 27.
Sabine 60, Waskom 42
LIBERTY CITY — Hudson McNatt led the way with 23 points, and the Sabine Cardinals rallied for a 60-42 win over the Waskom Wildcats on Monday.
Jaydan McPherson had 16 points, knocking down five 3-pointers for the Cardinals. Colt Sparks chipped in with nine points for Sabine, which trailed 10-7 after one quarter but led 26-22 at halftime.
West Rusk 44, Henderson 28
HENDERSON — Cole Jackson scored 12 points, Jimmie Harper added 10 for the Raiders and West Rusk earned a 44-29 win over the Henderson Lions on Monday.
Geremiah Smith finished with eight points for West Rusk. Tate Winings had five, Jaxon Farquhar four, Kason Reed and Ty Harper two apiece and Andon Mata one. Jimmie Harper had nine rebounds, Smith eight and Farquhar seven. Smith and Farquhar added three steals apiece, and Farquhar also had two blocked shots.
