Grace captures consolation crown in Frankston tournament

The Grace Community Cougars won the consolation championship of the Holladay & McCoy Insurance Frankston Basketball Invitational on Saturday at Robert Loper Coliseum at Frankston High School.

The Grace Community Cougars won the consolation championship of the Holladay & McCoy Insurance Frankston Basketball Invitational on Saturday at Robert Loper Coliseum at Frankston High School.

The Cougars were 4-2 in the tourney with wins over Arp (84-31), Cayuga (57-49), Troup (47-38) and Woden (62-47). Losses were to Beckville (63-40) and Troup (47-46).

In the consolation title win over Woden, Darius Shankle led Grace with 23 points, followed by Kole Crawford with 18. Others scoring for the Tyler squad were Peyton Kelly (10), Cade Covington (5), Daniel Shankle (4) and Wilson Smith (2).

Wade Stanaland led Woden with 13 points. Others scoring for the Eagles were Issac Velasco (9), Drake Pitts (8), Angel Velasco (7), Klayton Nelson (4), Zach Holler (2), Kevin Barnes (2) and Jase Green (2).

Grace finished 1-1 in the Pool Play on Thursday, winning over Arp, but falling to Beckville.



Against Arp, Darius Shankle led Grace with 20 points. Grayson Gaddis, Covington and Crawford each scored eight points. Will Bozeman, Reed Alexander, Smith and Kelly added six points apiece. Others scoring were Brenton Loftis (4), Daniel Shankle (4), Jared Hosch (4), Drew Gaddis (2) and Andrew Dancy (2).

Cornelius Pierre led the Tigers with eight points. He was followed by Jaylon Potts (6), Demarcus Wade (5), Wyatt Ladd (3), Landon Smith (3), Jaxon Schminkey (2), Abraxton Martin (2), Fisher Arrington (1) and Ty Bardsley (1).

In the game with Beckville, Smith led Grace with nine points, followed by Darius Shankle (8), Crawford (8), Gaddis (4), Alexander (3), Covington (3), Daniel Shankle (2), Loftis (2) and Kelly (1).

Three Beckville players were in double figures — J’Koby Williams (14), Jayden Mojica (11) and Coleman Bullock (10). Also scoring for the Bearcats were Jordan Prince (9), Tyson Oden (6), Bo Hammons (5), Je’Kelvin Smith (4) and JT Smith (4).

In the opening of bracket play, Troup edged Grace, 47-46.

Leading the Tigers were Trae Davis and Carson Davenport with 11 points apiece. Also scoring for Troup were Jarett Castillo (8), Colby Turner (6), Chris Calley (4), Cason Mills (3), Bryce Wallum (2) and Payton Elliott (2).

Pacing the Cougars Darius Shankle with 21 points. Others scoring were Crawford (9), Covington (8), Daniel Shankle (4), Alexander (3) and Kelly (1).

Troup then met Frankston in the next round, fallingn to the Indians, 39-20.

Scoring for the Tigers were Davis (10), Davenport (6), Wallum (2) and Grayson Hearon (2).

Kason Newport led Frankston with 11 points, followed by Cody Loebig (9), Benton Allen (9), Ke’Andure Barnes (4), AJ Donnell (2), Caleb Ramsey (2) and Tyler Rogers (2).

Following the loss to Troup, Grace defeated Cayuga to advance to the consolation semifinals.

In the win over the Wildcats, Darius Shankle led Grace with 15 points and Crawford added 12. Adding points were Daniel Shankle (9), Covington (7), Kelly (6), Loftis (6) and Alexander (2).

Dominic Johnson led Cayuga with 11 points. Others scoring for the Wildcats were Whit Jenkins (9), Marcus Thompson (6), Gunner Douglas (4), Chase Hearrell (4), Ben Winkel (4), Bo Barrett (2) and Brayden Collum (2).

Grace and Troup met again in the consolation semifinal with the Cougars winning this time.

Crawford and Darius Shankle were in double figures for the Coogs with 20 and 16 points, respectively. Also scoring for Grace were Kelly (3), Covington (2), Gaddis (2), Smith (2) and Daniel Shankle (2).

Troup (7-6) was led by Davis with 19 points. Adding points for the Tigers were Davenport (5), Mills (5), Elliott (5), Castillo (2) and Wallum (2).

The Tigers are scheduled to host Henderson on Tuesday. Game times are 4:30 p.m. (freshmen), 5:45 p.m. (JV) and varsity (7 p.m.).

The Coogs are 13-7 on the season and will play host to White Oak at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
