Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins will continue its online only education for the upcoming fall semester.

President Dr. Lester Newman said that having online only courses was a difficult decision to make, but it was in the best interest of the college in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Online classes for the fall will start Aug. 10 and end Nov. 20. As the college continues virtual education, fall sports have been canceled, but athletic and performance scholarships will be honored.

The college has also purchased laptops with access to Internet services, is providing virtual tutorials and academic counseling and increasing the bandwidth to assist the online platform.

During a campus-wide virtual meeting Thursday, Newman said measures have been put in place for the safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors, such as mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing protocols.

“Additionally, we have purchased thermometers and tool kits. Tool kits consisting of masks, hand sanitizers and cleaning products were packaged and provided to persons on campus,” Newman said. “However, due to the rise in the number of cases in the community and the communities where our students reside, we decided to remain online.”

Newman also noted the United States has had over 3 million COVID-19 cases and over 130,000 deaths. In Texas, as of Thursday, there have been 220,564 cases and 2,813 deaths.
