Events will continue this weekend after an unprecedented week of protests in Tyler, with hundreds of demonstrators each night supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and seeking racial justice. Prayer events also were held throughout the week.
The Prayer on the Square event brought together hundreds of people from the community to pray for racial unity on Friday evening, with music, worship and fellowship.
On Saturday, Fight for Justice ETX will host an event at Bergfeld Park called “Let’s Talk About It,” in which members of the black community will share their experiences and demand policy changes to protect East Texans.
The event will run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a voter registration booth will be on hand. Afterward protesters will march along South Broadway Avenue.
On Sunday, the Fuentes family will host a remembrance of Victor Fuentes at the downtown square in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests. Fuentes was killed in an officer involved shooting in Tyler in 2013. A Smith County Grand Jury declined to indict the officer, but the family was later awarded a $350,000 settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit.
