- A new mural greets visitors to the Glass Recreation Center in Tyler.
Glass Recreation Center, one of the most heavily utilized parks in Tyler, is undergoing a series of renovations that will expand its potential to host rain or shine events and overall enhance the park’s atmosphere.
Amongst the most prominent changes being made is the instillation of a large covered pavilion said Russ Jackson, director of parks for the city of Tyler.

“The park is used to host many community events including the Juneteenth event which is a large celebration of the emancipation for slavery. There is a parade and live music could be offered in the new pavilion,” said Jackson.
Although basketball courts can not be used at this time, they have installed a cover over the court so that people who wish to play won’t be limited by weather conditions. The floor of the court was improved and the court itself was expanded so that three on three tournaments can be hosted in the future. The court used to only have two goals, and it now has six.
A splash pad has also been installed to allow kids to play in the water on a hot summer day, and around the new pad they are installing sidewalks and picnic tables.
According to Jackson, Glass Recreation is a year round facility that is visited very frequently by community members.
The park offers walking trails and offers a low cost gym membership. The gym features an indoor weight room and cardio machines such as treadmills. Indoor and outdoor “pickleball” is also available.
The park has undergone renovations since 2001 and is one of the most scenic parks in Tyler, said Jackson.

“This is one of the most beautiful parks in the city because of the view,” said Jackson. “Thousands of people utilize it throughout the year.
Adjacent to the park is a new collegiate level baseball field. Another unique activity the park offers is golf classes through the non profit organization The First Tee.
“Glass Recreation is a large youth oriented facility,” said Jackson. “Summer school programs take the kids here on tours and do different activities with them. It’s very important that we put on events for them here.”
Through the renovations taking place at the park, Jackson is confident future events hosted at the facility will be set up for success.
