YAKIMA — Rev. John Edward Everhart, 79, of Yakima, WA, transitioned to the welcoming arms of the Lord our God on March 28, 2020.
He was born on April 20, 1940, in Tyler, TX to Percy Everhart, Sr. and Pearline Edwards Everhart.
He left Emmett Scott High School early at the age of 17 to join the Army for a 20 year tenure. John served our country valiantly in the Vietnam War, as a fire fighter and as a chaplain’s assistant until retirement. While in the army, he completed his high school education. John was a gifted carpenter, speaker, community activist and was most noted for his singing in church.
John met the love of his life, Annie Robinson in North Carolina. They married and remained together for over 56 years.
While stationed in Alaska, John answered his call to preach the gospel. In 1975, he was ordained at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Tacoma, WA. After his retirement, he moved to Yakima, WA and became pastor of Mt. Hope Baptist Church for 4 years. John’s final church home was Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church where he served diligently as pastor for over 33 years.
John was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Haywood Irwin. He is survived by his loving wife Annie Everhart, daughter Caroline Everhart-Irwin and son Stacy “Tiger” Everhart of Yakima, WA. Siblings Corine Everhart-Wilson, Percy Everhart, Jr. (Myra) and Joy Fay Everhart all of Tyler, TX; and Janet Everhart-Brown of Dallas, TX. Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and church family whom brought him support and joy.
