Defensive Player of the Week: Cayle Irvin

The famous “Mean Sting Defense” of the Alto Yellow Jackets is having another outstanding season.

In nine games, the ‘Jackets, ranked No. 8 in the state, have allowed only 71 points, that’s an average of 7.8 points per game.

Alto was at it again on Friday night, scoring a 57-8 win over Hawkins in Alto.

Leading the way for Black & Gold defense was senior middle linebacker Cayle Irvin.

The 6-0, 220-pounder led the Yellow Jackets with 14 tackles, including two for loss, as Alto moved to 9-0 on the season and clinching the District 10-2A Division I with a 4-0 mark.



For his performance, Irvin has been named the Peltier Kia Tyler Defensive Player of the Week for the 10th week of the high school football season.

He will be featured on a poster, sponsored by Peltier Kia Tyler, in Friday’s The Zone special section of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Previous winners were Chapel Hill senior linebacker Adrian Lacy (Week 1), Troup senior linebacker Max Hale (Week 2), Grand Saline senior linebacker Bryce Smith (Week 3), Tyler Lee senior defensive end/linebacker Jamal Ligon (Week 4), John Tyler junior free safety Travion Ates (Week 5), Gladewater senior middle linebacker Zach Villarreal (Week 6), Kilgore junior free safety Donovan Adkins (Week 7), Grapeland junior linebacker Cooper Sheridan (Week 8) and Brook Hill senior defensive back Seth Moss (Week 9).

On the season, Irvin leads his team with 100 tackles. He also has five sacks and three fumble recoviers.

Irvin and his teammates will try to finish the regular season with a 10-0 record when the Yellow Jackets meet Union Grove on Friday in Alto. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Cam’Ron Matthews Field
