TJC falls to Trinity Valley, 18-14

ATHENS — Trinity Valley scored the go-ahead touchdown two plays after recovering a muffed punt as the Cardinals defeated Tyler Junior College 18-14 on Saturday in a Southwest Junior College Football Conference game at Bruce Field.

TJC falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, while TVCC is 2-0 on the season and in conference.



After falling behind 12-0, the Apaches pulled ahead 14-12 entering the fourth quarter.

However the turnover on the punt gave the Cardinals the ball at the TJC 29-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Jeremy Hunt connected with Kenota Fiakpui for a 26-yard TD. The try for two failed and TVCC led 18-14 with 8:02 on the clock.

The Cardinals took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter on Hunt’s 16-yard run. The extra point attempt was blocked as TVCC led 6-0 with 14:01 showing. With 53 seconds left in the first quarter Eddie Godina booted a field goal for a 9-0 lead.

In the second quarter Godina added a 44-yard field and TVCC led 12-0.

TJC then scored two quick TDs — Taequan Tyler scored on a 7-yard run with 3:44 on the clock and David Johnson connected with Greg Howell for a 20-yard TD pass with seven seconds remaining in the half. Yovannie Garcia booted both extra points.

After a scoreless third quarter, TVCC cashed in with the fourth quarter TD.

Kevon Thompson led the Apaches in rushing with 60 yards on 10 carries, while Tyler added 53 yards and a TD on 10 attempts. Johnson hit on 14 of 32 passing attempts with an interception. Drue Jackson had three catches for 79 yards.

Hunt hit on 17 of 34 attempts for 159 yards. He was also the leading rusher with 42 yards on 13 carries. Fiakpui had seven catches for 117 yards.

The Apaches are on the road again next week, traveling to Corsicana to meet Navarro College at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. Trinity Valley plays host to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In other games: Georgia Military defeated Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 26-0; Kilgore College won over New Mexico Military, 35-26; Blinn College downed Navarro College, 38-33; and Cisco College topped Texas A&T, 56-7.
