Jalen Hurts went from Alabama’s “Crimson & White” to Oklahoma’s “Crimson & Cream” and picked right up where he left off.
After his standout performance in Oklahoma’s 49-31 victory over Houston, Sooners quarterback Hurts was named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the first week of the college football season, Cindy Smoak, SPORTyler executive director, announced on Wednesday.
The transfer from Alabama passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more, as No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past Houston 49-31 on Sunday night.
It was Hurts first game for the Sooners since he transferred. Hurts posted 508 total yards, the fifth most in school history. He completed 20-for-23 through the air for 332 yards and three touchdowns (no interceptions), while running 16 times for a career-high 176 yards (11.0 average) and three more scores. The OU quarterback was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week as well as Newcomer of the Week.
“He played well. There were some things he could do better, but I thought he handled the moment good,” Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley said. “You could tell out there that he’d been in it, certainly. I’m sure he had some nerves, but he did a good job managing them.”
Hurts is a graduate of Channelview High School in Channelview.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
