For the first time in decades, the Associated Press is not conducting a weekly high school football poll that was voted on by sports writers and broadcasters around the state.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine and TexasFootball.com will now take care of the poll. The rankings are compiled by the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football staff.

This is the first poll after the regular season began. Class 6A will now have a Top 25 with other classifications ranked in Division I and II, unlike the AP which lumped the divisions together.

That said, John Tyler, despite its 39-17 loss to Class 6A Mesquite Horn, stayed in the Top 10 as the Lions are No. 10. JT was No. 6 in the preseason poll.

The Lions will continue their 6A non-district schedule on Saturday, hosting Tyler Lee in the annual Rose City Rivalry at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Kickoff on Earl Campbell Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. Prior to the game the seventh class of the Tyler ISD Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted.

Lufkin, which fell to defending Class 6A Division II state champion Longview 24-21, dropped from No. 7 to No. 8.

Three-time defending state champion Highland Park is No. 1, followed by Denton Ryan, Richmond Foster, Frisco Lone Star and Alvin Shadow Creek. All those teams opened with wins. Only JT and Lufkin suffered losses in the 5A D-I Top 10.

In Class 6A, Longview won its 17th straight game and moved from No. 4 to No. 6. Defending state champion and preseason No. 1 Galena Park North Shore fell to No. 5 after its 24-21 defeat to Katy.

Duncanville, the 2018 6A Division I runner-up, moved from No. 2 to No. 1 after the Panthers’ 24-3 win over Lancaster. Katy moved to No. 2 from fifth, followed by Allen going to No. 3 from No. 4. Preseason No. 3 Lake Travis, a 35-14 loser to Arlington Martin, fell all the way to No. 21. Martin was not ranked in the preseason and is now No. 18. Midland Lee, a 45-21 winner over Smithson Valley, entered the poll at No. 25.

Two teams dropped out of the 6A poll — No. 18 Rockwall (66-59 loss to Highland Park) and No. 20 Waco Midway (20-14 loss to Euless Trinity).

In Class 5A Division I, Aledo stayed No. 1 despite its 60-57 loss to Class 6A’s Denton Guyer, which moved from No. 8 to No. 7. Rounding out the top five are Fort Bend Marshall, Corpus Christi Calallen, Huntsville and Manvel. Marshall, a 27-20 loser to Tyler Lee, dropped from No. 4 to No. 7.

Waco La Vega, a 28-14 winner over Medina Valley, stayed No. 1 in Class 4A Division I with Carthage No. 2. There were no changes in the preseason poll even though No. 7 Paris fell to 4A Division II’s No. 1 Texarkana Pleasant Grove, 22-16. Henderson remained No. 8 after its impressive 23-0 win over Whitehouse.

Following Pleasant Grove in the 4A Division II poll were Jasper, whose game with Lumberton was canceled, West Orange-Stark, Cuero and Waco Connally.

Gilmer, preseason No. 7, moved to No. 6 with its 47-26 win over Atlanta. Silsbee, a 48-35 loser to Port Neches-Groves, dropped to No. 7. The Buckeyes have an intriguing matchup at Van on Friday.

Preseason No. 8 Lorena, which lost 42-21 at China Spring, fell out of the poll. Sunnyvale, preseason No. 22, jetted up to No. 10 with a shocking 50-0 win over defending District 6-3A Division I champion Kemp.

In Class 3A Division I, East Texas teams dot the poll. Defending state runner-up Malakoff, a 40-14 winner over Teague, remains at No. 2 behind defending champion Grandview, a 38-14 winner over Glen Rose.

Gladewater, which defeated Spring Hill 39-26, moved from No. 7 to fourth. Atlanta dropped from No. 3 to No. 5. Jefferson, which was No. 14 in the preseason, moved into the Top 10 at No. 10 after the Bulldogs’ 49-7 win over preseason 4A Division II No. 13 Pittsburg.

No. 6 Brock (lost to Brownwood 10-0) and No. 8 Goliad (lost to Columbus 42-20) fell out of the poll. Along with Jefferson entering the Top 10, Wall bolted to No. 6 after its 47-7 win over Mason.

Newton remained atop Class 3A D-II. Following the Eagles were Canadian, Gunter, East Bernard and Clifton. Daingerfield dropped from fifth to sixth after the Tigers’ 22-21 loss to No. 3 Gunter.

Rogers, a 55-45 winner over Little River Academy, moved to No. 10. The previous No. 10, Tidehaven, lost to 2A Division I’s Refugio, 43-7. Following Refugio are Shiner, San Saba, Mason and San Augustine. Garrison, which was idle, is No. 8 with Tenaha, a 15-7 winner over Troup, at No. 9. Stinnett West Texas dropped out of the Top 10 after the Comanches’ 36-22 loss to Canadian. Hawley, a 39-0 winner over Roscoe, is now No. 10.

In Class 2A Division II, all the top 10 teams won and all 10 teams stayed the same in the poll. Mart is No. 1, followed by Falls City, Hamlin, Stratford and Grapeland, a 44-9 win over Milano.

White Deer moved atop the Class 1A (Six Man) Division I poll. The Bucks jumped from No. 3 to the top spot with a 72-28 win over Spur. Previous No. 1 Milford (54-30 over Groman) and No. 2 McLean (65-38 over Blum) fell to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

In Class 1A D-II, Jayton, a 48-0 winner over Anton, remained No. 1. Oakwood, which defeated Huntsville Alpha Omega, 79-53, is still No. 4.

Cedar Hill Trinity Christian tops the 11-man private schools poll after a 16-13 win over No. 3 Dallas Bishop Lynch.

In six-man private schools, Baytown Christian moved up from No. 2 to the top spot with a 42-34 win over Haslet Heritage. Previous No. 1 Bulverde Bracken lost to Dallas Lakehill Prep, 48-20.
