Rangers will retire Michael Young’s No. 10 jersey in August

ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers will retire former infielder Michael Young’s No. 10 jersey number in August.
Young will be the fifth Ranger to have his number retired by the club, and the second this season.

Texas announced the honor for Young on Tuesday, only 10 days after former third baseman Adrian Beltre’s No. 29 number was retired. Young’s ceremony will be Aug. 31 before a game against Seattle.
There will be an on-field ceremony at 6:40 p.m. The game’s start time has been moved from 7:05 p.m. to 7:35 p.m.
“Michael Young is certainly very deserving of this honor,” Rangers co-chairman Ray Davis said in a statement Tuesday. “His contributions to the Texas Rangers franchise have been extraordinary. On the field, Michael was one of the top hitters in the American League for over a decade and served in a strong leadership role. Off the field, his contributions in the community have had a huge impact in so many ways. We are very proud to make this announcement today.”
Young is the franchise’s career leader with 1,823 games played. He also holds team records with his 2,230 hits, 1,085 runs scored, 415 doubles and 55 triples. He has a a club-record seven seasons with a .300-plus average and six seasons with 200-plus hits.
He played his first 13 major league seasons (2000-12) in Texas, then split 2013 between Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring after that season.
Young, a seven-time All-Star, had a career batting average of .301.

Young won the American League batting title in 2005 (.331 batting average) while leading the league in hits twice (221 in ‘05 and 213 in ‘11).
He started at all four infield positions for Texas, and was a Gold Glove shortstop in 2008. Young was the All-Star Game MVP in 2006 when he hit a two-out, two-RBI triple off Trevor Hoffman in the ninth inning to give the American League a 3-2 win over the National League in Pittsburgh.
After retiring in January 2014, Young, now 42, joined the Rangers’ front office that November as a special assistant to the general manager.
The other three Rangers with retired numbers: Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan (No. 34, retired in 1996) and Ivan Rodriguez (No. 7, retired in 2017), and former manager Johnny Oates (No. 26, retired in 2005).
