Kilgore sweeps Benbrook in regional finals to earn state tournament berth

DALLAS — The Kilgore Bulldogs are headed to the state baseball tournament for the first time in 46 years.
The Bulldogs defeated Benbrook 13-4 on Thursday night to sweep their Class 4A Region II final.

The Bulldogs continued what they started in Game 1, scoring an 8-0 win over Benbrook earlier Thursday.
Kilgore led 2-0 on Wednesday in Tyler before severe weather forced a postponement. The series switched to Horner Ballpark on the campus of Dallas Baptist University.
The Bulldogs tacked on six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the first game.
Chase Hampton threw five innings in Tyler on Wednesday. The Texas Tech commit pitched one additional inning before Brayden Johnson hurled the seventh.
In six innings of work, Hampton allowed two hits while striking out eight and walking one. Johnson gave up one hit. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Duece Ervin had a triple for the Bulldogs with Khalon Clayton and Jayce McFarland adding doubles.

Conner Martin and Clayton each had two hits with singles from Cole Thompson, Cade Pippen and Donavan Adkins.
Ervin had two RBIs with Martin, Clayton, McFarland and Pippen adding one each. Scoring a run apiece were Ervin, Gus Witt, Clayton, McFarland, Thompson, Pippen, Adkins and AJ Smith.
The Bobcats were held to three singles — one each by Gabe Washington, Payton Poole and Devin Bennett.
