UIL State Softball: Rains advances to state title game

The Rains LadyCats will be playing for a state softball championship on Thursday in Austin.
Chanlee Oakes tossed a five-hitter and drove in two runs as Emory Rains scored a 4-2 victory over Brock in a Class 3A state semifinal on Wednesday at Red and Charline McCombs Field on The University of Texas campus.

The LadyCats (33-1) will play Hallettsville (37-1), a 12-2 winner over Danbury earlier Wednesday, in the title game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Oakes struck out four and walked two. Both runs were unearned. She threw 120 pitchers in seven innings of work.
Presley McAree led Rains, which won its 22nd straight game and is appearing in its second consecutive state tourney, with two hits. Catrin Hoffman had a double with Oakes, Jasmine Mott, Elissa Elliott and Sarah Coffman adding singles.
Along with Oakes’ two RBIs, Hoffman and Coffman drove in a run apiece.
Scoring runs for the LadyCats were Elliott (2), Terry (1) and McAree (1).
Kelsi Tonips led the Lady Eagles (33-7) with two hits, a double and a single. Hailey Blankenship, Payton Gasca and Jessica Leek all added singles. This was Brock’s eighth state tournament appearance.

Tonips and Leek drove in runs for Brock with Gasca and Landry Felts scoring the runs.
Brock took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Tonips doubled home Gasca, who had reached on an error.
The LadyCats tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning as Terry walked to lead off and stole second. She advance to third on McAcree’s groundout and then scored on Oakes’ sacrifice bunt.
That was the first of four consecutive innings the LadyCats tallied a run.
In the second, Elliott singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch. Then Hoffman doubled to left to plate Elliott and give Rains a 2-1 advantage.
With Oakes in control, Rains added to the lead in the third as Elliott and Hoffman walked after two outs. Coffman followed with a single down the right field line to drive in Elliott for a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Rains had three hits to gain a 4-1 lead. Once again it was a two-out rally by the Rains County school. McAree reached on a bunt single and then stole second. Oakes followed with a single to right to plate McAree. Mott followed with a single but that was all the scoring for the LadyCats.
Brock pulled within 4-2 in the fifth as Felts reached on an error and Tonips had an infield single. Felts scored on Leek’s grounder.
Oakes allowed the Lady Eagles a hit in the sixth and set Brock down in order in the seventh for the win.
In the first semifinal, Kezi Lange was 4 for 4 with four RBIs to pace Hallettsville (37-1).
Danbury (29-6) led 2-0. Rylee Trlicek hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2.
That’s the way the game stay until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Brahmas, appearing in their third state tournament, scored 10 runs to end the game on the mercy rule.
Trlicek (23-1) got the win in the circle, allowing five hits with one earned run. She struck out seven and did not issue a walk.
The Lady Panthers, appearing in their fourth state tournament, end their season at 29-6.
