State Track: Alto’s Thacker wins gold; Houston’s Boling, DeSoto girls relay set national marks

Alto’s Fred Thacker won gold in the shot put and discus, while Houston Strake Jesuit’s Matthew Boling (100-meter dash) and the DeSoto Lady Eagles (4×100 relay) set national records during Saturday’s UIL State Track & Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

The attendance for the meet on Saturday was 25,858.

Class 6A

Boling, a senior who will attend the University of Georgia, ran to a time of 10.13 seconds, breaking the 29-year mark of 10.15 set by Henry Neal of Greenville. Boling, who also won the long jump (25 feet, 4½ inches), now holds the Class 6A, state and national records in the 100-meters.

Plano East’s Tyler Owens, who has signed with Texas, was second at 10.38, followed by Lance Nathan Broome of Katy Seven Lakes (10.40).



The DeSoto Lady Eagles won the 400-meter relay in a time of 44.24 seconds, breaking the mark of 44.50 that Long Beach Poly (California) set in 2004. The relay of JaEra Griffin, Jayla Hollis, Taylor Armstrong and Rosaline Effiong also broke the Class 6A and state record of 44.60 that Dallas Skyline set in 2004.

CLASS 5A

Late Friday, John Tyler finished fourth overall in the 5A team standings as the Lions scored 30 points behind the silver finishes of Caleb McMiller in the 100-meter dash and the 4×100 relay (Kitan Crawford, Dyvione Patterson, Keandre Ray, McMiller) and the bronze medal of Patterson in the 300-meter hurdles.

Fort Bend Marshall won the 5A team title with 86 points, followed by Lancaster (56), Manvel (43), JT and Aledo (28). Whitehouse was 11th with 14 points (silver by Theron Franklin-Cobb in the high jump, bronze by Cameron Johnson in the pole vault).

Class 4A

Gilmer’s Parker Dodd placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a clocking of 14.21. Teammate Tra Fluellen was ninth (15.37). Devin’s Quentin Zapata won (13.84).

Kilgore’s Cameron Jackson took the bronze in the 100-meter dash. The junior clocked in at 10.72. Stafford’s Ryan Martin (10.34) and Taylor’s Dushon Orr (10.70) was just ahead of him. Carthage’s Kelvontay Dixon (10.81) and Athens’ JerQuindon Taylor (10.82) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Bullard’s Harrison Meador placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 1.39 seconds. Rusk’s Ladadrian Polk was eighth at 2:06.66.

Bullard’s Emily Berry was sixth in the 3200-meters with a time of 11:45.60.  

In the 400-meter dash, Athens’ Jamaze Roberts was eighth (50.78).

In the girls meet, Palestine’s Shayla Arthur placed sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.35).

Bullard’s Jenaia Williams captured fourth in the 400-meter dash with a clocking of 57.86.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Pittsburg’s Tyler Green was seventh (46.58).

Class 2A

Alto finished second in the 4×100 with a time of 42.79, just behind Shiner (41.88). The Yellow Jackets’ relay included junior Marvin Roberts, sophomore Jay Pope, junior Marlon Warren and junior Clayton Terry.

Alto’s Isaiah Gaddis was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.69). Valley View’s Cale Kassen set a Class 2A mark of 14.12, breaking record of Spur’s Tyson McKinney of 14.14 set in 2000.

Union Grove’s Kellen Williams was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (39.07) with Gaddis in fifth (39.80).

The Alto girls also fared well as BriAnna Green was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.57). Teammate Chesnee Upshaw was ninth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.87).

Cayuga’s Aerin Thompson finished sixth in the girls 800-meter run (2:23.23) and the 400-meter dash (1:01.23). 

In the boys 800, Union Grove’s Jose Fernandez was fourth at 2:01.23. 

Cushing’s Jeremiah Wilson was sixth in the 400-meter dash at 51.27, followed by the Hawkins duo of Issac Holland (51.29) and Akim Richmond (52.19) and Big Sandy’s Dakarai Menefee (52.81).
