The University of Texas at Tyler will make an announcement related to its mascot on Friday.
Representatives of the college said the announcement is set for 10 a.m. in the University Center Theater, according to a news release.
“The University has been discussing the possibility of a new mascot for a year,” the news release reads. “This announcement will reveal information about that decision.”
The college has been soliciting feedback from students for the past several months about possible replacements for its current mascot, Swoop. As part of rebranding efforts in its new strategic plan, the college has adopted new logos and focused on the “Patriot” aspect of its branding.
This emphasis has been met on social media with pushback from some students and alumni who are reluctant to give up their beloved eagle.
