On beautiful sunny afternoon in downtown Tyler, the stars were shining bright at First Baptist Church.
It was the introduction of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Stars on Sunday as athletes from around East Texas converged on the Rose City.
More than 300 players are nominated by their coaches for the Northeast Texas FCA Heart of a Champion all-star games. The contests include football, softball and baseball.
Robert Bardin, NETX area director, said a new sport will be added to the list in 2020 but he will wait until June to announce the addition to the lineup.
Some 200 all-stars are chosen for football, softball, baseball and cheerleading. Many were on hand as the “voice of Rose Stadium” Roger Nunnally introduced the athletes and coaches for each sport.
Nunnally also congratulated Longview for winning the 2018 Class 6A Division II state football championship.
The Lobos are well-represented in the all-star football game with Kaylon Allen, Kamden Perry, Daquavion Randall, Gavin Roberts and Keilyn Williams on the Red Team, which will be coached by Bullard’s Scott Callaway.
Lobos on the Blue Team, which will be coached by Lindale’s Chris Cochran, include Jaylon Allen, Marcus Harry, Jephaniah Lister, Jimmie Martin, Logan Peters, Tainique Taylor and Ja’vontae Writt.
John Tyler players on the Red team include Jarrius Lane, Frankie Sanchez and K’Lon Warren.
Lions on the Blue Team are Christian Hartsfield, Tyrell Jones, Roy Lampton and Dyvione Patterson.
Tyler Lee’s Carson Stokes is on the Red Team as is Bishop Gorman’s Jake Smith and Grace Community’s Braydon Stone. Gorman’s Tyler Hobbs is on the Blue Team.
This year marks the ninth year for the football game, sponsored by Chick-fil-A. The contest will be June 8 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
This will be the fifth year for the softball game and the fourth year for baseball. The games are scheduled for June 7 at UT Tyler’s Suddenlink Field (softball) and Irwin Field (baseball).
Bardin said 70-plus schools will be represented in the all-star games. The Northeast Texas FCA is in 14 counties.
“The Heart of a Champion All-Star games exist to bring glory to God, to bring recognition to the work of FCA in Northeast Texas, and to highlight the talent of the athletes and coaches of Northeast Texas,” Bardin said.
He added the vision is “to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.”
The softball head coaches are Lindale’s Meredith Grant (Blue) and Eustace’s Lauren Odom (Red).
Lindale baseball coach Rich Sanguinetti leads the Blue Team with Harmony’s Ronnie McNeel the Red Team head coach.
Kelly Nichols of Bullard is the cheerleading coach.
The NETX FCA Leadership Team includes: Bardin, administrative assistant Barbara Bardin, Gary Adams, Nancy Cavender, Pat Hargrave, Brad Harvey, Justin Jenkins, Jim Rapp, Dr. Paul Roberts, David Sanders and Ralph Stewart.
