Sally Simmons Smith

A memorial service for Sally Simmons Smith is planned at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dr. Stuart Baskin and the Reverend Pamela Leach officiating. Sally was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tyler, Texas, and loving daughter of Ed Roy, and Sallie Jo Simmons. Born in Teague, Texas February 3rd, 1927, she lived a full life, until the age of 91, and died peacefully October 27th, 2018. She majored in history, graduating from the University of Texas in 3 years with a Bachelor’s degree. While attending UT, she met her husband, Edmond LeGros Smith, a chemical engineer, and they married in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Corsicana Texas, and had two daughters, Melissa Smith Champion and Sally LeGros Smith Garmon. After moving to Connecticut, she volunteered for the Junior League’s resale shop, and worked on a Master’s degree in Latin American history at the University of Connecticut. Following a return to Houston, she worked at the Rice University campus bookstore where she enjoyed her interactions with students and faculty and ordered trade books. She enjoyed travel, playing bridge and tennis, mentoring confirmands in the church, and many friends. She was also an avid reader, and a member of a literary club, Quid Nunc. Sally volunteered as a room mother, PTA member, girl scout troop leader, and Sunday school teacher, and was a lifelong member of Presbyterian Women, serving as co-moderator of Presbyterian Women in 1990, and awarded an honorary lifetime membership in Presbyterian Women in 1996. Realizing God’s grace in His gift of Jesus Christ, she donated her body to Baylor College of Medicine, so that others could continue to learn from her, even after her earthly life ended. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Roy Simmons, and her husband, Edmond. Survivors include daughters, Melissa “Missy” and Sally; sons-in-law, Stan Champion and Jim Garmon; grandchildren, Stanton Champion, Austin Champion, Kate Champion Lynn, Ben Garmon, and Joshua Garmon; and great-grandchildren, John Wells Champion, Katherine Grace Champion, Pyburn Virginia Lynn, Ruby Jane Garmon, Grant Garmon, and Lilah Garmon; as well as niece, Rebecca Simmons; and nephews, Patrick Simmons, Roy Simmons, and Joe Simmons; and many loving cousins. The family wishes to thank all of her care providers at Reunion Plaza, Heart to Heart Hospice, Drs.
