Gladewater HS football moves into poll top 10

With another impressive victory on Friday, the Gladewater Bears have bolted into the top 10 of the Texas High School Associated Press State Football Poll.

The voting by sports writers and broadcasters around the state was released on Monday.

Gladewater (4-0) moved into the Class 3A poll as the No. 9 ranked squad after upsetting defending Class 4A Division II state champion Pleasant Grove Friday night in Texarkana.

The Bears defeated the Hawks, 44-37. Last week, Pleasant Grove was ranked No. 3 and with the loss the Hawks fell to No. 6.

Gladewater opens District 8-3A Division I play on Friday, traveling to Winnsboro (2-2).



Pleasant Grove (3-1) plays host to Chapel Hill (1-3) on Friday.

In Class 6A, Longview (4-0) stayed at No. 6 after QB Haynes King threw for 330 yards in the Lobos’ 56-35 win over Ruston, Louisiana.

Longview opens District 11-6A play on Friday, hosting Rockwall.

Allen tops the 6A poll, followed by Lake Travis, Galena Park North Shore, Cypress Fairbanks and Converse Judson.

In 5A, Lufkin (2-1) remained at No. 4. The Panthers were open last week and will begin District 8-5A Division I action on Friday at Willis.

Aledo tops 5A, followed by Dallas Highland Park, Denton Ryan, Lufkin and Fort Bend Marshall.

After its convincing 66-14 win over Gilmer on Friday at Jeff Traylor Stadium in Gilmer, Carthage remained atop the 4A poll. The Bulldogs (4-0) are open this week before hosting Texarkana Pleasant Grove on Oct. 5.

Carthage is followed by Arygle, Midlothian Heritage, Liberty Hill and Giddings. Gilmer dropped out of the top 10 after the Buckeyes’ loss to the Bulldogs.

Van and Gilmer received votes.

Newton (3-0) received all 25 first-place votes in Class 3A. The Eagles are followed by Golidad, Canadian, Gunter and Childress.

Newton plays host to Gilmer on Friday.

Rockdale is sixth, while West Rusk is seventh and Gladewater ninth.

Waskom and Jefferson received votes.

In Class 2A, the Price Carlisle Indians (4-0) are No. 9 again this week. The Indians defeated New Boston 48-0 on Friday and will play at Simms James Bowie on Friday.

Mason is the top team in 2A, followed by Shiner, Wellington, Muenster and Refugio. Tenaha and Joaquin received votes.
