The Tyler Public Library is hosting a series of classes teaching adults how to be … well, adults.
The first installation of “Adulting 101” is scheduled for Saturday, where a representative of Capital One will lead a class about financial literacy, specifically, how credit works.
Aleya Stone, reference librarian at Tyler Public Library, said library officials were inspired to begin the series after noticing certain life skills were being taken for granted as common knowledge.
“Personally, I was never really taught how credit works,” Stone said. “There’s no financial class in most public schools.”
Stone said the series not only presents an opportunity to bring the public into the library, it also provides an opportunity to form relationships with outside entities.
The September session of Adulting 101 will feature the League of Women Voters presenting a class on voting. The October session will be targeted toward teenagers, featuring a Capital One representative explaining how to responsibly manage a checking account. In November, the library is planning to have a representative from Tyler Junior College teach a course on automotive repair.
“I think schools really focus on the foundation of knowledge and some parents are working full time too so they might not have all of the time they need to be able to educate their kids on some of those life skills, or they may not know themselves,” Stone said. “We’re trying to fill in the gaps.”
The library plans to continue having installations of the courses every third Saturday of the month from 2-4 p.m. For more information and an updated schedule, visit: http://library.cityoftyler.org/Programs/Adulting101.aspx
