The man charged after a wreck that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old boy worried he had hit a person but was too scared to call an ambulance, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. Instead, he called his father.

According to the document, 22-year-old Josue Alejandro Prado Ramirez’s vehicle, a 2008 Volkswagen Passat, struck Demarion Williams, 11, before 2 a.m. Sunday. It would be more than six hours before law enforcement was dispatched to the scene.

Police said Williams had run away from home that night between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Ramirez’s passenger, Alexis Mone Herring, told police after the vehicle hit something in the road that Ramirez turned around to go back through the area and Herring saw a hat, shoe and cellphone in the road.

Herring said Ramirez took her home, stayed at her house for a while, then left.

Ramirez told police Herring told him about the shoe, hat and cellphone she saw when they passed by the scene, and he believed he saw a cellphone because he saw a light in the grass, near the hat and shoes, the document says. He told police he got scared he had hit a person.

After leaving Herring’s home, he drove back through the area and saw the items of clothing, according to the affidavit.

Ramirez and Herring both told police they did not stop to check for an injured person before leaving the scene nor did they call for an ambulance, according to the document.

Police determined Ramirez was the driver after viewing security camera footage from a local business that showed a man and woman getting out of a dark-colored vehicle in the parking lot to check for damage. The business owner recognized the woman.

When an officer went to Ramirez’s house, he saw a damaged car that matched the vehicle in the security camera footage.

Ramirez has been charged with accident involving death, a second-degree felony. No charges had been filed against Herring as of Tuesday evening.
