ETexas beekeeper group meets today

Peter Cole, 2018 East Texas Beekeepers Association senior ambassador, and Jacob Cole, 2017 ETBA senior ambassador, will present a program at a 2 p.m. Sunday meeting in the Azalea Room at the Tyler Rose Garden Center, 420 Rose Center Drive.

There is no admission and the meeting is open to public.

Border Lows to hold monthly campout

The Border Lows, a local chapter of Loners on Wheels, will have its monthly campout Thursday through May 13 at Clear Spring Park at Wright Patman Lake near Texarkana.



All singles are welcome.

Federal employee group to meet

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will hold its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church, 230 Rusk St., Tyler.

The program will feature Coleman Swierc, community partnerships coordinator with the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas. He will speak about current scams in East Texas.

All current federal employees, federal retirees, their spouses and survivors are welcome.

Genealogical Society meets Saturday

East Texas Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tyler Public Library auditorium, 201 S. College Ave. The meeting is free and open to the public.

William D. “Bill” Buckner will speak about the “1890 Census Substitutes: Bridging the Gap.” He has been genealogy supervisor of the Genealogy Center of Waco-McLennan County Library for the past 19 years.

Buckner is District H representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society, serving as the chair of the book awards and as the overall TxSGS awards chair.

Event focuses on female executives

The Tyler Executive Women’s Network will host the event “Lean In 2018: Playing Big to Mentor Young Women Executives” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 17 at the Holiday Inn on South Broadway Avenue.

The event is part of an initiative to identify and provide mentoring to young women executives in the East Texas area. It is open to the public and tickets are $30 per person.

Lindale firefighters plan annual fish fry

Lindale Fire Department will host its annual fish fry on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Lindale Central Fire Station, 208 E. Hubbard.

Donations will be accepted.

All proceeds will benefit Lindale Volunteer Fire Department.

Friends to hold Butterfly Release

The 15th annual Butterfly Release will be at 1 p.m. May 19 at the Children’s Park, 110 E. Dobbs St., Tyler.

Compassionate Friends Inc. is a national nonprofit self-help organization for families who have experienced the death of a child.

The local chapter holds support group meetings the third Monday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 17555 Texas Highway 155 South, Flint. All bereaved parents, adult siblings and grandparents are welcome at all meetings.

Compassionate Friends is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization and charges no individual dues or fees.

Palestine library hosts literacy event

The Palestine Public Library, in partnership with the East-Central Texas United Way and the Library Friends, is hosting the Dogwood Children’s Literacy and Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 inside the Palestine Mall, 2000 S. Loop 256.

The festival will center on author and illustrator Jim Arnosky, who is scheduled to attend. There will be four dramatic reading areas where children will hear four of Arnosky’s books. The United Way will also be hosting booths with crafts and activities for children.

Arnosky is also to be at the “Chow With Crinkleroot” ticketed dinner event at 6 p.m. June 9 at the library. Tickets are $10 and are available at Palestine Public Library. Tickets are presale only with no tickets sold at the door.

The author dinner will include kid-friendly foods as well as outlandish decor based on Arnosky’s book characters.

Each child will receive one of Arnosky’s books for signing at the dinner.

JT Class of ’73 class reunion is May 19

The John Tyler High School Class of ’73 is celebrating its 45th reunion on Saturday, May 19 at the Magnuson Grand Hotel in Tyler.

Organizers are hoping to reach as many classmates as possible.

Rusk to hold Memorial Day fair

Rusk Chamber of Commerce will have its Memorial Day Weekend Fair on the Square on Saturday, May 26.

There will be arts and crafts, food, demonstrations, a street dance and more.

Booth spaces are available: regular vendors, $40, food vendors, $100, and nonprofits, $25. If paid after May 14, add $10.

The Robert E. Lee High School class of ’78 is planning its 40th reunion June 22-23.

Hoops for Hope event coming in July

The Hoops for Hope Basketball Tournament, a 3-on-3 tournament, will be July 13, 14 and 15 and has brackets for both male and female players from junior high to those over 35.

The event will be at the Salvation Army Community Center and All Saints Episcopal School. Team registration will be $125.
