HOUSTON (AP) — Gerrit Cole struck out a career-high 14 in seven innings and Derek Fisher scored the go-ahead run on Drew Robinson’s error in the eighth, sending the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

Cole allowed two runs and three hits. The ace right-hander has 36 strikeouts in 21 innings in his first three starts with Houston after he was acquired in an offseason trade with Pittsburgh.

But Cole Hamels kept Texas in the game with six effective innings, limiting Houston to two more homers by George Springer.

Fisher came in to run for Evan Gattis after he walked with one out. Marwin Gonzalez followed with a single to center off Kevin Jepsen (0-2), and Fisher scored all the way from first after Robinson misplayed the ball.

Joe Smith (1-0) got the final out of the eighth for the win and Chris Devenski finished for his first save.

Texas put two runners on with one out in the ninth, but Devenski struck out Robinson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to end the game.

Before Fisher’s dash around the bases, four solo homers accounted for the scoring.

Springer put Houston in front with his second leadoff homer of the season off Hamels, joining the one he got on opening day.

He led off the fifth with another drive. He has three homers this season — all coming against Hamels.

Texas responded with two homers in the seventh. Joey Gallo hit a drive to deep center with one out, and Robinson Chirinos connected with two down.

RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 3

BOSTON (AP) — Eduardo Nunez hit a three-run homer, Eduardo Rodriguez struck out eight over six stingy innings and the Boston Red Sox equaled their best start in 100 years with a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

Rafael Devers went 3 for 5 and scored twice for the Red Sox, who are 11-2 for the first time since 1918. J.D. Martinez had a pair of hits and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly during Boston’s four-run first inning, which put the Red Sox in command on the way to their 11th victory in 12 games.

The Red Sox had already matched their best start over 12 games with a 6-3 win over the Yankees on Thursday night. With this victory, Boston reached 11-2 for just the second time in franchise history, matching the start of 1918 World Series championship team.

INDIANS 8, BLUE JAYS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Teoscar Hernandez thought for a moment Andrew Miller had struck him out. Then he struck back.

Hernandez made the most of his season debut — and a close call against Miller that went his way — by driving in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for an 8-4 win over Cleveland, snapping the Indians’ five-game winning streak on Friday night.

Hernandez, who was recalled earlier in the day when the Blue Jays placed third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day disabled list, added an RBI double in a three-run ninth. METS 6, BREWERS 5

NEW YORK (AP) — Todd Frazier and the New York Mets are grinding out win after win after win, and he already has devised the team gesture.

Frazier hit his first two home runs with the Mets, new catcher Jose Lobaton tripled in his first at-bat with the team, and New York extended its winning streak to nine with a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

YANKEES 8, TIGERS 6

DETROIT (AP) — Aaron Hicks hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, then added a solo shot over the fence in the sixth to send the New York Yankees to an 8-6 victory over the skidding Detroit Tigers.

Hicks came up with a runner on second and hit a drive to right-center that bounced off the wall and past center fielder Leonys Martin. The ball rolled across a vacant area of turf while Hicks circled the bases for the Yankees’ first inside-the-park homer since 2011.
