Dr. Shreya Patel, who is board certified in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, will lead the Saturday Walk With a Doc.
She will discuss diabetes.

Walk With a Doc, a project of the Smith County Medical Society, begins at 9 a.m. at Rose Rudman Recreational Trail’s Copeland Road trailhead, followed by walking.
Q: What is diabetes and what causes the disease?
A: Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by raised blood glucose levels due to a defect in insulin production, or action or both.
Q: Can you prevent diabetes?
A: Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable with lifestyle modification.
Q: Are there ways to treat diabetes without medicine?

A: Diabetes can be treated entirely or in addition to medication/insulin by keeping weight under control, exercising more, eating healthy diet, not smoking etc.
Q: What are some complications of diabetes?
A: Increased risk of heart disease and stroke, kidney damage (nephropathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), eye damage (retinopathy), amputations due to infection in the foot, dental problems and infections.
