It was truly bedlam on Saturday as Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for nearly 600 yards in leading the No. 5 Sooners to a 62-52 win over rival and No. 11 Oklahoma State.

For his performance, Mayfield earned the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the 10th week of the college football season, Cindy Smoak, SPORTyler vice president, announced on Tuesday.

Mayfield, an Austin native, passed for a school-record 598 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score in one of the highest-scoring games in the history of the rivalry.

Mayfield, a Lake Travis High School graduate, connected on 24 of 36 passing attempts, and the 598 yards was the most by an FBS player this season and second most over the past three seasons. No FBS quarterback has thrown for as many yards with as few pass attempts or pass completions as Baker Mayfield’s 598 Saturday.

“Baker was awesome; played at an elite level and broke a school record for passing. What more could you say? The guy, he’s awesome,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “He doesn’t flinch. He’s made for atmospheres like this. This is his favorite thing in the world is to play in deals like this, and I think it shows.”

This is Mayfield’s second Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week honor this season. He also won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
