After leading his Oklahoma Sooners to a big win over Ohio State on Saturday, quarterback Baker Mayfield has been named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the second week of the college football season, Cindy Smoak, SPORTyler vice president, announced.
Mayfield led the Sooners to a 31-16 win over No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, a game that marked the Buckeyes’ largest margin of defeat at home since 1999.

It was also just OU’s second road victory over a top-two AP poll opponent in non-conference play. The other came in 1963 in Bud Wilkinson’s last year as Sooners head coach.
Mayfield, a graduate of Lake Travis High School, completed 27 of 35 pass attempts, including his final 14, for 386 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. OU’s 386 passing yards were the most allowed by Ohio State at home since 1985 and marked Mayfield’s career high against an AP Top-25 opponent.
Mayfield, an Austin native, directed OU to a 490-yard night, the most yards surrendered by Ohio State in 34 games and most allowed in Columbus in five seasons. He led the Sooners into Ohio State territory on nine of the 10 possessions that began on OU’s side of the field.
Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins was the winner in Week 1.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year DI Texas college.
