For those who know Greg Ward Jr., it’s not surprising he is making a strong showing at the Philadelphia Eagles camp.

After signing as a free agent, the former John Tyler High School and University of Houston quarterback has wowed the coaches.

He converted to wide receiver in the spring in hopes of landing an NFL job just as other signal callers-turned pass catchers such as Drew Pearson, Julian Edelman and Terrelle Pryor.

Ward made a leaping one-handed touchdown catch that brought him attention on the first day of workouts.

Not only has Ward made the spectacular plays but also the routine, steady catches, which coaches love.

The Eagles have found undrafted wide receivers the past few seasons, including Paul Turner, Bryce Treggs and Rasheed Bailey. So Ward may find himself as another find by the Eagles.

He is making a serious case for one of the six wide receiver spots on the 53-man roster. Ward has caught five passes for 41 yards in the Eagles’ two preseason games. He had four catches for 12 yards in the Eagles’ 24-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 10 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Against Buffalo, a 20-16 win at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Thursday, Ward hauled in a 29-yard reception. He gets another chance on Thursday when the Eagles play host to the Miami Dolphins. Kickoff is 6 p.m. (NFL Network).

Camp observers have noted Ward’s speed, especially his burst off of the line of scrimmage, and his hands.

Ward has also played the slot and fielded punts during practice.

“I think Greg’s transition has been phenomenal,” Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “Again, I say that, I get excited as a coach. I see he has some instinctive natural movements as a slot receiver, things that are hard to coach that he does exceedingly well. He has a knack; he has very good ball skills. I’m just really surprised. I think he’s way exceeded expectations.

“But the other side of me, ‘OK Frank, temper that, we’ve still got a long way to go.’”

Still, it’s quite an impression.

Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Nelson Agholor and Mack Hollins are almost assured to make the team, but six is the usual number of wide receivers on the squad.

Ward is hoping for a shot at that.
