Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary to hold games day

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will hold a games day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 26 at the organization’s marketplace building, 717 N. Spring St.

In addition to mahjongg and bridge, the event will feature lunch, prizes and a chance to shop.

Attendees may pay $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Payments can be mailed to Jennifer Jones, Salvation Army, 633 N. Broadway Ave., Tyler, TX, 75702. All proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army of Tyler.

July 4 celebration to take place at Winchester Park in Chandler 

Fireworks, hot dogs, barbeque sandwiches and a parade will be featured at Chandler’s Annual Old Fashion Fourth celebration at Winchester Park on July 4. 

The concession stand will open at 6 p.m. and the float decorating booth will open at 7 p.m. Children can bring their bicycles, wagons, tricycles, scooters, etc., already decorated or stop by the booth for their patriotic additions.   

 This year’s parade around the park will start at 8 p.m. and prizes will be awarded to the best entries.

The annual event is sponsored by the Chandler Historical Society, the city of Chandler, Chandler EDC and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

 

Emmett J. Scott class of 1967 to hold reunion

The 50th reunion for the Emmett J. Scott class of 1967 will take place July 8 at the Magnuson Hotel & Conference Center, 3310 Troup Highway.      

Registration takes place from 8 a.m. to noon and outside activities are scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. The reunion program and dance begins promptly at 6 p.m.

All classmates are asked to attend and be present for roll call.

Transit to offer free rides to Tyler library for children and teens this summer

The Tyler Public Library is partnering with Tyler Transit to bring children and teenagers to the library this summer.

Through Aug. 31, children and teens wanting to go to the library, 201 S. College Ave., can ride the bus for free. Throughout the summer months, the library offers a multitude of free programs for all ages to coincide with its annual Summer Reading Club.

Transit and transfer passes are free for children and teens up to age 18, only to and from the library. Adult passes are $1 each. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult over 18 at all times.

Families wishing to take advantage of this offer will need to show a Tyler Public Library card to the bus driver and state that they are either traveling to or from the library.

Concert to benefit the East Texas Fraternal Order of Police

Coach’s & Cowboy’s, 8374 Paluxy Drive, will host a family food and fun event Aug. 11 that will feature a model car show and concert that will benefit the East Texas Fraternal Order of Police.

Beginning at 4 p.m., families and supporters of all ages can enjoy menu items, drinks and games at the grand opening of the newly remodeled Coach’s sports bar, with proceeds being given back to the FOP. At 5 p.m., supporters of all ages can visit the classic model car show in the parking lot.

At 7 p.m., the doors will open at Cowboy’s for a benefit concert featuring country music artist Curtis Grimes, with opening act Brian Chance. Advance concert tickets are $15, and $20 at the door for attendees 18 and older only. Concert tickets will be available for purchase online by July 1.

Nonprofit to hold banquet to help fund scholarships

Kids Aspiring To Dream, a talent and performing arts nonprofit, will host a scholarship fundraising event titled “Plates for Scholars,” at 11:30 a.m July 13 at the Tyler ISD Career and Technology Center, 3013 Earl Campbell Parkway.

The luncheon will feature performances by the Caldwell Elementary School Jazz Band and the Caldwell Arts Academy, as well as youth performers from the nonprofit.

Kids Aspiring To Dream was founded with a mission to provide a platform for young people to utilize their gifts in areas of the arts.
