AUSTIN – Union Grove junior Summer Grubbs won gold in 2A girls long jump on the second day of competition at the UIL Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Grubbs did not get off to the best start, scratching on her first attempt in the finals, but that was her only hiccup. The Lady Lions leaper went 17 feet, 6 and three-quarter inches on her second jump, which put her in contention. On her next-to-last attempt, Grubbs moved ahead over everyone with a mark of 17-10.25.

It was good enough for the gold medal and it helped the UG girls track team begin the meet with 10 points in their quest for a team title.

Tina Douglas of Lufkin Pineywoods won gold in the 2A girls high jump by being the only athlete to clear 5-7. Hannah Moore of Mount Enterprise was fifth and Carlisle’s Hayley Jordan was eighth.

Clashon Gaffney of Clarksville took top honors in the 2A boys triple jump, posting a winning mark of 47-0.

In Class 5A, Pine Tree’s Eric Hawkins won silver in the boys 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 1:53.65. He just missed catching race winner Butare Rugenerwa of Amarillo (1:53.27).

On Saturday, Robert E. Lee junior Branson Ellis will look to add a gold medal in 6A boys pole vault to the silver one he won last year.

The third and final day of competition completes the field events with running finals for 2A, 3A, 4A and 6A.
