Northbound lanes on U.S. Highway 271 were shut down for several hours Wednesday morning after a man was struck by a vehicle and died from his injuries.

Officers with the Tyler Police Department were dispatched to a major accident at the 10700 block of U.S. Highway 271 at 1:51 a.m. Wednesday.

At the scene, they determined a vehicle traveling northbound struck a pedestrian in the outside lane.

The Tyler Police Department later identified the pedestrian and believe the person intentionally ran out in front of the vehicle from the far edge of the shoulder, as the driver was heading northbound on Highway 271. Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Don Martin said investigators were able to reach this conclusion through a combination of interviews with the pedestrian’s family and the driver who struck the pedestrian, as well as by examining where the incident occurred.
