Southern Gospel concerts, suicide awareness training among upcoming faith-related events

 DOWN EAST BOYS CONCERT

Central Baptist Church, 116 W. Mt. Vernon St. in Mabank, will present the Down East Boys in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. A $15 donation will be received at the door. For more information, go to www.newgracepromotions.com. 

On Sunday, the group will perform at 10 a.m. as part of the morning worship service at First Baptist Church of Winona, 212 Dallas Street. There is no admission fee and a free-will offering will be received.

 

ART AUCTION



Congregation Beth El Sisterhood will present its 39th art auction to the community on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Congregation Beth El, 1010 Charleston Drive, 75703. The preview will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the auction at 7 p.m. The collection will include about 160 pieces of art with sports memorabilia, watercolors, oils, lithographs, giclees and serigraphs in all price ranges. Featured artists will include Jane Wooster Scott, LeRoy Neiman, Michel Delacroix, Marc Chagall, Guido Borelli and Norman Rockwell. Marlin Art will present the event. A $10 donation will include complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Call 903-581-3764 for more information. The funds are used to support the congregation’s religious school for children, to pay temple expenses, and to support local and nonlocal charities.

 

WOMEN’S MEETING

The Tyler Council of Church Women is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. Monday at Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road. The first activity will be a fellowship for the membership followed by the program/meeting at 10:30 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring toilet paper, paper towels and tissues for the nurseries. COUCH TO 5K 

Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road, in Tyler will offer the “Run for God” Couch to 5K program starting Wednesday. An Ironman finisher is scheduled to teach the 10-week trip to better health. The sessions will begin with a short devotional at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Pollard’s Spirit Life Gym, with training to follow. Child care is available on request. Contact the Rev. SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING

The Samaritan Counseling Center of Tyler is scheduled to present Soul Shop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The training event is designed for faith-based community leaders and is intended to help them better minister to people at risk for suicidal thinking, those who are concerned for friends or family members, those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide and those who have experienced suicidal thinking in the past. Cost is $25 and scholarships are available. A free community event is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening. It will provide awareness training about suicidal desperation. IVAN PARKER CONCERT

Gospel artist Ivan Parker will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Friday at Tyler’s Westwood Baptist Church, 820 NNW Loop 323. Parker’s performances have included appearing on the Gaither Homecoming video series. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10. BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Bethany Word of Life Tabernacle, 6808 Paluxy Drive, in Tyler will have its first

Black History Month program this year after the 10 a.m. worship service on Feb. 5.

The program is one of a four-part series in February, in celebration of Black History Month.

Gussie L. Daniels III is the scheduled guest speaker for the first program. A fellowship dinner will follow.

Texas College English professor Dr. Kenneth Usongo is the scheduled speaker for Feb. 12.

On Feb. 19 and Feb. 26, a movie about Black America since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. will be shown.

Each program will follow the 10 a.m. worship service. All events are free and open to the public.

COMMUNITY MOVIE NIGHT

Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler will show the movie “Trolls” at 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at its Founders Center (on the southeast corner of Pollard’s campus), 3030 New Copeland Road. The free Community Movie Night will include complimentary prizes and snacks.

 

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

“Breathe, Making Room for Sabbath,” is the title of an evening women’s Bible study at Holly Brook Baptist Church, 3219 S. Farm-to-Market 2869, in Hawkins starting Feb. 13. Based on a book by Priscilla Shirer, the five-week study will be held from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Judy Dorman will lead. Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Ed O’Neal and his Dixie Melody Boys Quartet from Kinston, North Carolina, are scheduled to be in concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at Highland Park Baptist Church, 2801 S.
