REDLANDS, Calif. – The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler Patriots earned a 91-79 non-conference win over Redlands on Friday where they owned a 32-6 scoring advantage in the paint and outscored the Bulldogs 14-5 in the final three minutes of play at the Currier Gym.

The Patriots (2-0) led throughout, but were only up 77-74 with 3:32 to play before going on a 9-0 run that was capped by a Makenzi May 3-pointer to take the lead to 86-74 with 1:17 remaining. May would hit another 3 to cap scoring as the Patriots opened their two-game weekend in California with the win despite being limited to only six 3-pointers.

Michelle Obach led the Patriots with 21 points after going 5-for-14 from the field and 11-for-15 from the free-throw line while Re’Elle Miller had 18 points by shooting 7-for-8 from the field. UT Tyler would shoot 50 percent as a team (31 of 62) and was 23 of 34 from the free-throw line. The Patriots only struggle was from beyond the arc where they went 6-for-21, but they more than made up for it with a 42-35 rebounding advantage and with 13 steals.

D’Onna Matthews joined Obach and Miller in double digits with 12 points and had nine rebounds to finish one board away from a double-double. Alexus Bertrand would score all 11 of her points in the first half to help the Patriots to get out to a 43-42 halftime lead over the Bulldogs. Dia Evans had eight rebounds and freshman Carissa Spiker had seven for the Patriots who finished with 11 second-chance points.

Redlands falls to 0-1 after dropping its season-opener to the Patriots.
