All Aboard: Polar Express train departs from Palestine depot

A train whistle sounded as pajama-clad children climbed on board.

The train’s passengers departed on a mysterious journey through the piney woods to discover the magic of Christmas.

Passengers on the Texas State Railroad’s Polar Express ride relived the classic children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg.

Friday was the opening day for the winter train event. The railroad has tickets available through Dec. 23. It boards at its Palestine depot.

Children snacked on cookies and sipped hot chocolate as rich as melted chocolate bars while the novel was read aloud. 



Santa greeted the children, who each receive a special gift – a silver bell from his sleigh.

The train has departure times at 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on various dates, according to a news release.

Ticket prices range from $20 to $109 depending on class of service and date of travel.

Families are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the ride, according to the release.
