Harmony too much for Paul Pewitt, 48-21

LONGVIEW – Next man up is a philosophy often referenced in football. Each week key players can be lost due to injury and the onus falls on the replacements to step up and produce.

Friday night that axiom was employed by the Harmony Eagles in their 48-21 drubbing of the Omaha Paul Pewitt Brahmas at Pine Tree’s Pirate Stadium in Class 3A Division II bi-district play.

The Eagles were minus the services of quarterback Spencer Seahorn, who was out with an injury sustained in last week’s regular season finale against Lone Oak.

In his absence, the trio of Michael Edmonson, Nick Hoelsher and D.J. Click more than picked up the slack. The triumvirate absolutely eviscerated Paul Pewitt’s defense with counters and trap plays.

The Eagles (9-2) rolled up 544 of its 558 yards on the ground and moved on in the state schoolboy playoffs. Harmony will face the Henrietta Bearcats (9-2) at a site and time yet to be determined.

Paul Pewitt, which finishes the year 6-5, actually opened play with a money-producing 67-yard march that found the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

The Brahmas used an up tempo passing game that moved the chains. Lucas Hungerford connected with Tyshun Mitchell for 11 yards and Nick Garrett for 16 before Trabon Betts slipped in from two yards out at 10:16.

Harmony, which was turned back on its initial possession, drove 94 yards in nine plays with a steady dose of Edmonson and Hoelsher before closing with Click.

Edmonson, who led the Eagle assault with 239 yards on 25 carries, ripped off runs of 15, 14 and 14, while Hoelsher added a 17-yard romp on iso. Hoelsher finished the evening with 215 yards on 21 touches.

After the heavy lifting was completed by Edmonson and Hoelsher, Click was called upon to cash the winning ticket and he did to the tune of five rushing TDs. Click’s 10 total totes amounted to 27 yards, but half of them went for scores. He also added a pair of 2-point conversions.

The second Eagle score took 10 plays to negotiate 59 yards in 3:20 of the second quarter. Quarterback J.P. Powers converted a third and two with a 4-yard keep, while Edmonson and Hoelsher chipped in with runs of 15 yards each.

Click hurdled in from four yards out and followed that with a 2-pointer to make it 16-7 with 8:31 showing in the first half. Powers was picked by Mitchell a possession later, but the Brahmas were unable to convert the miscue into points.

The Eagles went to work and plowed 79 yards in seven plays and only needed 2:45 of the quarter to do so. Click leaned across the goal line for his third tally with a little over two minutes to go. Key in the drive was Powers and Edmonson converting a third and 13 with a 14-yard screen pass.

Taking the second half kick, Harmony moved methodically 65 yards in six plays as Edmonson got the call and literally carried tacklers across the line.

A 40-yard Hungerford to Mitchell pass play set up Pewitt’s second score. Hungerford forged his way in from two on a keeper at 2:37 of the third to make it 28-13.

Hoelsher rumbled 39 yards on a trap and Click did the honors for a 34-13 advantage.

Harmony would find paydirt twice more in the fourth courtesy Click carries, while Pewitt got a score when Hungerford pegged Mitchell on a 11-yard slant.
