Early voting starts Monday in the Nov. 8 general election, and officials say that new voter registration numbers could mean a record turnout.

“There are 135,185 people who are currently registered to vote in Smith County,” Smith County spokeswoman Casey Murphy said. “In the last presidential election, in 2012, there were 102,626 registered voters; and in the 2008 presidential election, there were 80,774 registered voters in Smith County.”

Voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 28; from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29; from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 30; and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 through Nov. 4. Any Smith County voter can cast a ballot at one of five early voting locations and three temporary satellite locations during the early voting period.

There are some changes in the state’s Voter ID laws that voters will see in this election.

The approved forms of Voter ID are still the Texas driver license, a Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by the Department of Public Safety, a Texas personal ID card issued by DPS, a license to carry a handgun issued by DPS, a U.S. military ID with a photo, a U.S. citizenship certificate with a photo and a U.S. passport.

“Smith County voters who cannot obtain one of the seven approved forms of photo identification now have additional options at the polls,” Ms. Murphy said. “As provided by a court order, if a voter has a reasonable impediment to obtaining one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by signing a declaration at the polls explaining why the voter is unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, and providing one of various forms of supporting documentation.”

Those supporting documents can include an original, certified birth certificate, a valid voter registration certificate, a copy or original of one of the following: current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows the voter’s name and an address.
