It is estimated that there are 20,000 homeless and hungry people in East Texas. HiWay 80 Rescue Mission with facilities in Tyler and Longview provide the basic staples, food, shelter, clothing, and ”the opportunity to hear and receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Tyler Director Gary Crim said, “Here in Tyler, we have a day resource center called the Gateway to Hope. We provide a place to get out of the heat or the cold for the homeless, a place to clean up, a place to do laundry, use the phone, use the computer, and even get a haircut on Thursdays.” A shuttle takes people who need a place to stay overnight to the Longview facility.
