Whitehouse juniors Mason House and Ryan Walls led a surge that propelled the Wildcats from a fourth-place finish in District 16-5A to the Class 5A semifinals.

The two were already honored as Co-Players of the Year on the Tyler Morning Telegraph’s All-East Texas team and now have been chosen for the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Baseball team.

House was named to the third team for Class 5A as an outfielder with Walls chosen for the third team as a pitcher. House batted .404 with four homers, five triples, three doubles and 30 runs scored while Walls was 8-3 with a 1.69 ERA in 70 innings with six complete games, three of those shutouts.

Also named to the all-state team from Class 5A as honorable mention were Lindale junior second baseman Jamey Richey (.500 average, 22 runs, five doubles, three triples, 14 RBIs, 11 SBs) and Marshall junior catcher Cam Haller (.370 average, six home runs, 18 RBIs, 24 runs scored).

The area did not receive all-state recognition for Class 6A with Dallas Jesuit senior Kyle Muller chosen Player of the Year for that classification after he went 9-1 with a 0.42 ERA with 142 strikeouts in 83 innings. He also played in the outfield, hitting .393 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs for state champion Jesuit.

In Class 5A, the Player of the Year was San Antonio Alamo Heights’ Forrest Whitley. The senior pitcher, who signed with the Houston Astros after being drafted No. 17 in the first round, was 10-1 with a 0.28 ERA.

In Class 4A, Athens senior Landon Bynum (.447 average, 34 runs, nine doubles, one triple, three home runs, 34 RBIs) was a second-team third baseman with senior teammate Alex Fernandez (.425 average, five doubles, two triples, 18 runs scored, 19 RBIs, 13 stolen bases) chosen as second-team outfielder.

Rains senior Ryan Ratliff (.448 average, eight doubles, two home runs, 16 runs scored, 22 RBIs) was named honorable mention at first base. Rusk junior Noah Acker (.409 average, 31 runs score, five doubles, three triples, 12 stolen bases) was honorable mention outfielder with sophomore teammate Parker Millsap (.406 average, 19 runs, 20 RBIs, 19 stolen bases) also honorable mention for the outfield.

Abilene Wylie senior Mack Mueller, who signed with Rice, was Player of the Year after he went 12-0 with a 1.01 ERA in leading the Bulldogs to a state title.

In Class 3A, Grand Saline sophomore Connor Lowe (10-1 record with 1.29 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 70.2 innings) was chosen an honorable mention pitcher with senior teammate Aaron Bolin (.446 average, 10 doubles, 35 runs scored) named honorable mention shortstop.

Harmony sophomore Nick Hoelscher (9-2 record with 1.12 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 62.1 innings) was chosen honorable mention pitcher.

Edgewood sophomore Trey Erwin was honorable mention catcher after he batted .371 with 10 extra-base hits to go along with 14 runs scored and 20 RBIs. Joining his teammate was Turner Bannister (.394 average with 24 run scored, 26 RBIs) as honorable mention shortstop and Tye Elie (batted .408 with 29 runs scored, 28 RBIs) as honorable mention at third base.

West’s Bailey Horn was chosen Player of the Year after the senior pitcher went 13-3 with a 1.29 ERA in leading West to the state title.

In Class 2A, Big Sandy senior shortstop Layton Vonberg was chosen to the all-state second team after delivering a season in which he batted .492 with 20 runs scored and 17 RBIs with 15 stolen bases. Teammates Austin Hendrix and J.T. Lilley joined Vonberg as honorable mention selections. Hendrix, a junior, went 8-2 with a 0.57 ERA and 98 strikeouts with three saves while Lilley, a senior outfielder, batted .344 with 15 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

Carlisle senior Zane Navarro was honorable mention at second base after he batted .359 with 24 runs scored and was 25 for 28 on stolen base attempts.

Beckville’s Ethan Harris and Flatonia’s Casen Novak shared the Player of the Year honors. Harris went 14-0 with a 0.99 ERA while also batting .457 as an outfielder with 46 RBIs. Novak batted .485 with 30 RBIs and 26 stolen bases to lead Flatonia to a state title.
