It is the seventh time in the 57-year history of the “bible of Texas football” that an East Texan has appeared on the cover. It is the second time for Kingsbury to be highlighted.
Mahomes joins Tyler’s Earl Campbell (1995, 2006), Longview’s James Street (1969), Sulphur Springs’ Forrest Gregg (1989), Lufkin’s Reggie McNeal (2005), Texarkana’s Ryan Mallett (2006), Gilmer and Canton’s G.J. Kinne (2006) and Tyler-born and Kerrville and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel (2013).
The magazine is scheduled to hit the shelves on June 24.
The cover mirrors the 1963 one featuring Texas coach Darrell Royal and Longhorn defensive lineman Scott Appleton. That season the Longhorns won the national championship, beating Navy in the 1964 Cotton Bowl.
Texas Football magazine managing editor Greg Tepper (@tepper) tweeted, “I’ve long wanted to recreate the 1963 cover of DCTF. A modern spin on a classic. Really pleased with the cover.”
He noted the main feature on Kingsbury and Mahomes is written by FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

Mahomes, who was named the top player in Texas after his senior season at Whitehouse High School, will be starting his third season in Lubbock. He had a breakout sophomore season, passing for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns. He added 456 yards rushing and 10 TDs.
Mahomes, son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes and Randi Mahomes, led Texas Tech to the second-highest scoring team in the nation (45.1).
The magazine also named Mahomes first team on its All-Texas College team.
For just the second time in the publication’s history, the magazine also has a secondary “gatefold” cover, featuring the high school equivalent of the dynamic coach-quarterback duo – Austin Westlake coach Todd Dodge and quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Dodge is a former Texas quarterback and Ehlinger is a Longhorn commit.
“It’s been a long time since there were this many compelling characters in the Lone Star State,” Tepper said. “From all corners of the state, there are tremendous stories to tell. But for us, the idea of Kliff Kingsbury – the preeminent quarterback guru in the state – finally having his hand-picked signal-caller is too exciting to pass up.
“And to celebrate Texas high school football as well with Todd Dodge and Sam Ehlinger on the secondary cover – all while recreating one of our most iconic images – it’s something about which we are truly excited and proud.”
Campbell, the John Tyler High School graduate, did not appear on the magazine while he was playing at the University of Texas. Campbell was coming off an injury-plagued junior season and Dave Campbell, who the Tyler Rose calls his cousin, instead had Texas Tech QB Rodney Allison on the cover. The Longhorn senior went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1977, the first UT player to do so.
In 1995, Campbell appeared in an illustrated collage featuring important figures in Southwest Conference history, along with Bill Yeoman, Royal, Fred Akers, Sammy Baugh, Doak Walker, Mike Singletary and Grant Teaff.
The Tyler Rose later was on the 2006 cover with East Texas quarterbacks Kinne of Gilmer and Mallett of Texas High, along with quarterbacks John Chiles of Mansfield Summit and Jarrett Lee of Brenham.
Kingsbury was on the 2002 cover. The Texas Tech QB was featured with coach G.A. Moore of Celina High School, Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Drew Tate of Baytown Lee High School.
Street was featured as the Texas quarterback after his breakout season in 1968, while Gregg was the coach of SMU at the time he was on the cover in 1989. McNeal and Manziel were featured as Texas A&M quarterbacks.
