There’s a new physician in town who specializes in caffeineology and hopes to administer shots – espresso shots – to all of his patients. DOC’s Cafe, which recently opened on South Broadway Avenue, offers medically themed pastries and java.

“It’s something different, and that’s what I wanted,” owner Monica Jastrow said. “I wanted something quirky and something where someone could come in and just basically embrace their imagination – something a little different.”

Ms. Jastrow, entrepreneur and former stay-at-home mother, opened DOC’s Cafe on May 23, utilizing skills from her background in coffee shop management and baking. A unique twist on a coffee shop, DOC’s Cafe offers locally sourced baked goods and coffee beans from roasters in Tyler.

While the theme is original, Ms. Jastrow said the business’ name was mainly a matter of word play. Originally, the location was set up for another business with a different theme.

“We were trying to figure out how to save money on the signage,” Ms. Jastrow said. “It was just a joke actually, so we thought about it and after I took over the lease I decided to just kind of run with it.”

With a simple rearranging of some lettering, DOC’s Cafe was formed. DOC himself, the character who represents the caf←, was brought to life with the help of local artist Hope Boland.

Bob Jastrow from Design Quest assisted his daughter-in-law with the logo for the new business.

The cafe’s name was just the beginning of the creativity Ms. Jastrow brought to her business. Though many of her drinks are common recipes with unique measurements of syrups and sauces, some are completely Ms. Jastrow’s creations.

The “Dr. Banner,” an energy drink with an Italian soda twist, is one of Ms. Jastrow’s recipes, offering her customers a Hulk-sized boost to their day.

“The ‘Dr. Banner’ is actually my drink creation,” Ms. Jastrow said. “It’s green and fun. It is interesting to make.”

In addition to baked goods and coffee, the Doc also offers healthy breakfast and lunch options from the self-serve omelet bar to homemade meals to-go.

DOC’s Cafe is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
