PARRY: Chancellor Hance excited about Tech sports

Former Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance uses Twitter and commented about a recent video that shows current Red Raiders quarterback and Whitehouse graduate Patrick Mahomes throwing over 65 yards from his knees.

“Now that … well, you are not allowed to throw the football once your (knee touches the turf), but if they change that rule, we’ve got the man for that,” said Hance in a light moment during his address as keynote speaker for the 12th annual J.L. Gulley Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday at Willow Brook Country Club.

The Tyler Chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association hosts the event, which raises money for  four-year scholarships each year to Tech.

“We’ve got 375,305 dollars in the East Texas Community Foundations fund,” said Larkin Simmons, daughter of the late J.L. Gulley, and director of the event. “Daddy was all-about Tech.”

Hance gave an update on Texas Tech athletics, beginning with the football team, which is coming off of a record-breaking offensive season, led by Mahomes.

Defensively, however, was another story. Despite giving up an average of 43.6 points per game, the Red Raiders went 7-5 and received an invitation to the Texas Bowl against LSU.

“This is the first time in seven years that the defensive coordinator will be the same guy it was last year,” Hance said. “We had some takeaways last year, but they recruited more defensive players last year than offensive players.

“One defensive player in particular from Keller was being recruited by Texas, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, all of them – but his girlfriend was going to Texas Tech and that always helps.”

The Tech men’s basketball team is coming off reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007. Shortly after the season, Tubby Smith left the Red Raiders to take the same position at Memphis.

“Tubby ran a great program and Memphis offered him $3.9 million, and he left,” Hance continued. “We wound up with Chris Beard and Chris is a die-hard Texas Tech guy.”

Beard famously, or infamously, left UNLV to fill the Tech vacancy after he’d been a head coach with the Running Rebels for 10 days.

“He is a good coach and a great recruiter. We lost Todrick Gotcher and Devauntagh Williams (to graduation), a couple guards, and the two that have replaced them were the No. 1 and No. 2 unsigned junior college players in the country,” Hance said. “He also got another kid who graduated from Arkansas State (and has another year of eligibility) and will be a NBA player. So he’s adding and he’s a great coach and will run a great program.”

The Red Raiders football season will kick off Sept. 3 against Stephen F. Austin at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock.
