Jacksonville adds murder mystery to Tomato Fest attraction.

Jacksonville is getting everything in place for its biggest celebration of the year – the Tomato Fest on June 11.

The 32nd annual festival pays homage to the Cherokee County’s heritage as a tomato-growing and tomato-packing center.

Most events will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along a stretch of Commerce and Austin streets downtown, at the Norman Activity Center and the space under the Highway 69 bridge.

Among the attractions will be the best homegrown tomato contest, a salsa making contest, tomato peeling contest and tomato eating contest. There also will be motorcycle and antique car shows, bands performing throughout the day, a farmer’s market, free health screenings, food and crafts vendors, art and history displays and a special kid’s zone play area.

The annual street dance at 1225 S. Jackson will begin at 7 p.m. and feature the Ally Venable Band, Steve Carpenter and Reagan Johnson.

A new event being held in conjunction with the festival is the Tomato Fest Murder Mystery set for 7 p.m. on June 9 at The Landmark Event Center, 402 E. Rusk St.

Catered by Traditions, the meal will include fried green tomatoes and homegrown sliced tomatoes as well as appetizers and a buffet with tossed salad, chicken and beef kabobs, fresh vegetables and desserts.

Tickets to the murder mystery dinner cost $25 and can be purchased at Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce or by calling 903-586-2217.

More information about the festival is available on the chamber’s website, jacksonvilletexas.com.
