Apaches tied for first

BROSIG/STAFF THE TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE tennis team is ranked No. 2 in the nation and will seek the national championship beginning Monday in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in the Plano area. The Tyler Junior College Apaches were undefeated on their first day of play in the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Tournament in Plano.
TJC, ranked No. 2 in the nation, is tied for the top spot with No. 1 ASA College-Miami and Seminole State (Oklahoma) after Tuesday’s second day of action. All three squads have 27 points. Mesa (Arizona) is fourth with 24.5 points, followed by Abraham Baldwin (Georgia) with 23.5 points.
Jacksonville College is ninth with 18 points and host Collin College is 10th with 16.5. Defending national champion ASA College-New York is 11th at 16.
All TJC netters received byes on Monday.

Flight 1 – No. 2 seed Ferran Calvo def. Daniel Diaz, Prairie State (Illinois), 6-3, 6-3.
Flight 2 – No. 3 Ciro Lampasas def. Przemek Zielinski, Seward (Kansas), 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Flight 3 – No. 2 Enrique Pardo def. Xavier Graells, Harford (Maryland), 6-2, 6-2.
Flight 4 – No. 5 Jonah Candelario def. Pablo Safont Ferrer, Harford, 6-3, 6-2.
Flight 5 – No. 3 Philip Franken def. Jorge Godoy, Cowley (Kansas), 6-2, 6-0.
Flight 6 – No. 4 Chris Anders def. Patrick Nguyen, Collin, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
Apache doubles results include:
Flight 1 – No. 2 Calvo-Pardo def. Diaz-Shannon Francis, Prairie State, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Flight 2 – No. 5 Franken-Lampasas def. Deepak Vishavkarma-Martin Zarate, Abraham Baldwin, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Flight 3 – No. 3 Anders-Logan Powell def. Tomas Dirube-Emmanuel Popadinec, ASA-New York, 6-4, 6-1.
Jacksonville’s Maximilien Blancaneaux, the No. 6 seed in Flight 1, advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jon Koons of Lewis & Clark (Illinois).
In Flight 2, Kendall Stephens of JC won his first round match (6-1, 6-1) over Max Holloway of Marion Military (Alabama), but he fell in the second round to No. 4 seed Vishavkarma of Abraham Baldwin, 6-4, 6-4.
JC’s Cristian Pons has won two matches in Flight 3 – 6-2, 6-1 over Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Noah Tippen and 6-3, 6-4 over No. 6 seed Prince Gbadamosi of Collin.
In Flight 4, Jacksonville’s Antonio Pons won his first-round match 6-2, 7-6 (3) over Facundo Couso of ASA-New York, but lost his second match to No. 2 Eric Ahren Moonga of ASA-Miami, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
The Jaguars’ Oscar Ferrero won his two matches – 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Matt Fisher of Mesa and 6-3, 6-0 over Will Irwin of Meridan (Mississippi).
In Flight 6, Jacksonville’s Jimmy McCormick received a bye in the first round, but lost on Tuesday to Popadinec of ASA-New York, 7-5, 6-1.
Blancaneaux and Cristian Pons teamed up in Flight 1, but lost to ABAC’s Eymeric Chevalier and Elvyn Nguyen, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
In Flight 2 doubles, Ferrero and Stephens won two matches – 6-0, 6-0 over Brian Collier and Hector Rodriguez of New Mexico Military and 6-4, 6-0 over Ryan Costello and Leo Rodriguez of Glendale (Arizona).
McCormick and Antonio Pons won their first round match in Flight 3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 over Prairie State’s Lutho Kempole and Josh Hester, but lost their next match to No. 4 Christian Borrero and Vincent Reynaud of Cowley, 6-1, 6-0.
Quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday.
