Even Tyler native Matt Flynn was shocked, and he knows a thing about free-agent quarterbacks benefitting from hefty free-agent contracts.
The Houston Texans and Brock Osweiler agreed in principle to a $72 million deal over four years with $37 million guaranteed – including a $12 million signing bonus.
Not bad for a quarterback who has a combined seven starts in his four-year NFL career.
“Wow I know I’m going to get killed for this and I don’t have a lot of room to talk, but this latest QB contract is unbelievable,” Flynn said via Twitter.
It is massive and it created the top headlines in the country Wednesday afternoon.
And you know what?
The Texans should be applauded.
Former Atlanta Falcons coach Jerry Glanville famously was mic’d up when he deadpanned to an official whose call he did not agree with, “This is the NFL which stands for Not For Long when you make them ******* calls!”
I think the NFL now stands for Not For Long unless you have a quarterback – the not for long part refers to job security of general managers and head coaches.
Since the inception of the franchise in 2002, the Texans have two playoff victories total. The Texans are currently on their fourth head coach with Bill O’Brien entering his third year.
He now has something that none of the previous four coaches can boast having -a young, hungry, highly sought after quarterback. Matt Schaub kind of falls into this list, but really in my humble opinion, Osweiler will be the best quarterback in Texans history.
That’s not saying much, considering who he has to surpass: David Carr, Schaub, Brian Hoyer, Tony Banks, Sage Rosenfels, T.J. Yates, Case Keenum, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallett, Matt Leinart, Brandeon Weeden, Dave Ragone.
Peyton Manning was able to walk off into the sunset, but the only reason the Denver Broncos were even in the Super Bowl last year was Osweiler stepping in and making sure Denver kept winning to secure home-field advantage for the playoffs. Sure, he was benched and Manning rode in like the cavalry to do just barely enough to get past Pittsburgh, New England and Carolina to win a Super Bowl title.
Osweiler now puts Houston in the Super Bowl conversation. The only defense that was better than the Texans last season in points allowed per game was the Super Bowl champion Broncos. With J.J. Watt and Co. doing their part on defense, much like Von Miller did for Denver, Osweiler will not be asked to turn into Andrew Luck, but rather keep the chains moving and make big plays when available to superstar receiver Deandre Hopkins.
The Texans made the playoffs last year despite being forced to turn to Hoyer, Mallett, Yates and Weeden.
Yes, the Texans overpaid.
But Houston finally has a quarterback.
