Smith County should spend its money on road repairs

Published 7:39 pm Thursday, February 11, 2016

The front page of Tuesday’s Tyler Morning Telegraph quotes Smith County Commissioner Terry Phillips regarding Smith County roads “that roads aren’t cheap and we have to have a tax increase to pay for them.” That probably explains why our county roads are a mess of patches and holes where patches used to be.

An article on Page 3 notes that special prosecutors are continuing to move forward on the case of the infamous alleged campaign sign thief, retired Gen. John Furlow, who incidentally has already been tried once – resulting in a hung jury.

Furlow’s attorney, Scott Ellis, notes the county has already spent more than $40,000 on this case, which he summarizes as a political vendetta.

At the risk of being obvious, one would hope that the county powers that be would focus on the real problems of the county and try to think of a better use for $40,000 than sending it down a legal rabbit hole.

RAVES

East Texas Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 30 gave a fabulous concert of musical entertainment.

Special guest musicians, Time for Three, double bass and two violins, brought a variety of traditional classical with bits of country, western, gypsy, jazz uniquely blended.

This high-energy concert was an outstanding offering to our area.

Thank you, Richard Lee, director and conductor, the orchestra members, Time for Three, and all persons who contributed to making the concert a great experience.

ENDORSEMENT

It has been our honor to have your state Rep. Dan Flynn standing with us for life in the Texas Legislature.

Dan is a man of great faith and high integrity, and he has been a faithful, strong supporter of every pro-life bill filed on his watch.

As a matter of fact, the life issue is what motivated Dan to seek office, and he has never failed to offer us his help and assistance.

Since being elected in 2002, Dan has helped pass dozens of pro-life laws, including the Prenatal Protection Act (2003), which recognizes the personhood of unborn children beginning at fertilization, protecting them from violent crimes of homicide and assault; requiring parental consent for abortion on minor girls (2005); funding alternatives to abortion (2005-2013); the Sonogram Law (2011), perhaps the strongest in the nation, requiring women be given the opportunity to see an ultrasound image of their unborn child and to hear the heartbeat before abortion; defunding Planned Parenthood $29 million of $31 million per year (2011); authorizing the Choose Life license plate, promoting adoption (2011); House Bill 2 (2013), which significantly raises the standard of care for women receiving abortions and bans abortion after the fifth month; reforming the judicial bypass process for minor girls who want to obtain a secret abortion without parental involvement through a court order (2015); and reforming end of life laws to ensure patients are not denied food and water (2015).

Voters in District 2 may rest assured they are represented with honor.

Your representative cares about your community and Texas. His values and priorities have never wavered, and Dan is the same man in Van or Canton that he is in Austin.

The Texas Legislature needs committed pro-lifers like Dan Flynn, and it is our hope that you will vote to send him back to help us in our efforts to protect moms and babies from abortion.
